1944211521944. Japanese American incarceration photographs dating from World War II document civilian life and military presence at several internment and assembly centers established after the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast. Following Executive Order 9066 in 1942 more than 120000 people of Japanese ancestry were confined in temporary assembly centers and longer term relocation camps administered by the War Relocation Authority. The photographs record daily activities of men women and children within these camps and illustrate the physical environment of the barracks settlements created to house incarcerated civilians during the war.

Archive contains six original silver gelatin photographs measuring approximately 2.5 × 2.75 inches to 3.5 × 5.75 inches. The images depict Japanese American families and individuals at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming Camp Amache in Granada Colorado and Pomona Assembly Center in California. Several photographs show families gathered in front of barracks style housing units typical of the camps. One image from Amache shows a family of six standing on the steps of their assigned unit with the wooden barracks structure visible behind them. Another photograph from Pomona shows two United States soldiers seated on a storage trunk outside a camp building likely serving as patrol or security personnel. One image from Heart Mountain shows a military medic standing beside an ambulance truck while gesturing toward camp structures in the distance. Other photographs include a group portrait of Japanese American young men standing in front of a brick building possibly a school building within the camp and a separate image of the same individual standing beside a lake. Another photograph shows a young Japanese American girl playing on a see saw while families watch a sports game in the background with camp buildings visible beyond the field.

Pomona Assembly Center served as one of the temporary detention facilities established in 1942 before incarcerated families were transferred to permanent camps such as Heart Mountain. Heart Mountain became the fourth largest relocation center eventually housing nearly fourteen thousand people while Amache in Colorado confined more than seven thousand internees the majority of whom were American citizens by birth. Living quarters in these camps consisted of small rooms within hastily constructed wooden barracks assigned to individual families. The photographs preserve small moments of social life and recreation within these confined communities illustrating how families attempted to maintain routines despite the conditions of incarceration. Photographs remain clear and well preserved with light age wear consistent with vernacular prints. Very good condition overall and a revealing visual record of Japanese American life within wartime relocation centers. unknown

This archive of legal documents chronicle the efforts of Montana rancher Zene Bucy to connect his ranch land cut off from the County Road from Monica to Lakeview MT in the years prior to World War I so that he could fulfill a logging and sawmill contract with Martin Fricks. Zene Bucy’s ranch was sandwiched between the T.C. Beattie and William & Margaret Koch ranches outside of Monida and his only option was to take over and build a road across Koch’s land. Initially Koch objected and insisted that Bucy buy the land for $ 150.00 as well as build a very expensive fence along the entire length of the road. Bucy refused hired Robison as his attorney and months later was able to have the County Road Commissioners rule that he could keep the road and only owed $ 30.00. At the time Beaverhead County MT was not only a bustling County Capital but also one of the major suppliers of wool cattle and lumber for Idaho and Montana mining companies. The Bucy’s were an influential Centennial Valley family in Beaverhead County first established by Andrew Bucy followed by his sons Monroe Zene Louis & Manley who all owned ranches in and around Monida MT and Dillon MT. Zene Bucy 1886-1928 operated as a rancher until after World War I and then sold out and moved to Denver CO where he owned and operated a cigar store until his death. The family is best remembered for the gunfight between Louis Bucy and brother Monroe Bucy which caused Monroe to buy and operate the Cowboy Bar in West Yellowstone in order to remove himself and his family from living near Louis. Koch 1869-1952 and wife Margeret 1883-1923 owned the ranch near Dillon MT until her death and then he relocated to Missoula MT. Monida MT still exists as a small unincorporated town with a population of 2 near the Montana - Idaho border. 431914No place: no publisher 1976. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong 16mo. Spiral bound paper and cardboard wrappers with tipped-on elements on the front. 24pp. An artist sketch book repurposed to serve as a prospectus for a new comic strip written by Peg Montana wife of Archie creator Bob Montana along with his art assistant Jeff Cuddy following Bob's sudden death in 1975. The prospectus consists of photomechanically produced cover and interior illustrations with a single strip mounted on the verso of each page along with a slogan fact or pithy comment about the strip's appeal. The inside front wrap also has two mounted tipped-in paper slips one summarizing the strip and the other listing Cuddy's address in Manchester New Hampshire. The strip's humor was came from the alien's observations and misinterpretation of Earth culture. Our research turned up no evidence that the strips was published outside of a brief showing in a small newspaper in Delaware County Pennsylvania which may have been its only appearance in print.
