Folded in half horizontally with some minor light brown stains to the verso of a few pages. Together with a 16 page catalog for an exhibition at the Goethe house illustrated in color and black & white with photos of Jochen Seidel's drawings and paintings. The softcover octavo catalog bound in stapled white wraps measures 9-1/8 inches high by 6 inches wide. There is minor soiling & creasing to the covers. Very good. <p>On the cover sheet of her essay on Jochen Seidel's work Jo Roman has written: "Enclosed material has not been edited.For further information contact Ms. Jo Roman" followed by her address and phone number. The work consists of a 2-page "Outline" in which Roman pieces together biographical material drawn from "family and friends" and from "a scramble of papers he left". Following the biographical outline is a very personal 2-1/2 page essay about which she observes that it "is part of my personal overview and so subjective. I admired Jochen as an artist and platonically loved him throughout his seven years in New York City". Following this essay is a page titled "Jochen Seidel: Exhibits and Awards". The concluding three pages are what Roman calls a "Descriptive Outline" an attempt to show the range of Seidel's work in chronological order.<p>The Goethe House catalog includes a lead essay by Jo Roman an essay by the abstract expressionist artist Ethel Kremer Schwabacher and an essay by art historian and curator Harry Rand. Laid into the catalog is a postcard invitation to the reception.<p>Jochen Seidel 1924-1971 was a German artist who studied with Ernst Schumacher in West Berlin. In 1961 and 1964 he exhibited at the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh PA. In 1962 he accepted an offer to teach at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. From 1964 Seidel resided in a loft at 812 Broadway in New York City and befriended Jo Roman and her husband Mel for the last 7 years of his life. He hung himself in his studio sometime around May 30 1971.<p>Jo Roman 1917-1979 was an artist and an advocate for the right of people to commit suicide. This advocacy became particularly defined after the death of her friend Jochen Seidel. A diagnosis of breast cancer put her on the path of her own suicide. In 1980 PBS broadcast a then controversial program titled "Choosing Suicide" documenting the reasons for Roman's suicide through interviews with her between February and May of 1979. The first Strophe in Plattdeutsch is set to music on the last page before the collophon. A lovely example of 1920s letter press work here as a "Gesamtkunstwerk" limited edition collaboration between a series of skilled bookmen. The original text was concluded "vor etwa hundert Jahren." OCLC locates only one copy presumably not this version "Baerenreiterdruck von 1923 at NYPL. Of utmost scarcity and desirability. Mary Elliott then Mary Belson began writing for children in 1809 at a time when increasing literacy and wealth and more progressive understanding of the reading needs of children were creating a growing demand for more and more books for young people. Beginning with two books in verse - one a lively tale about town and country mice the other an anthology including many of her own poems - she went on to produce a stream of books on a variety of subjects. Her stories some eventful and exciting were mostly about real children learning to tackle the everyday circumstances and difficulties which they encountered in the world around them. These books were made all the more attractive by her publisher William Darton who provided them with entertaining illustrations many of them interesting today for their depiction of contemporary scenes and fashions. Mary Elliott's books soon spread across the Atlantic and American publishers reissued many of them sometimes adapting the text to local circumstances. Leather on spine is chipped upper front joint and at the head of the spine. <br /> <br /> Content consists of 50 pages of inscriptions tipped in and pasted down illustrations and hand drawn sketches. Inside are 5 black and white pencil sketches one black and white and color sketch one color sketch and one small color illustration. Several cut out illustrations are tipped inside the album and several loose cuttings laid inside. A couple of small petals also laid inside. Several blank leaves. Two of the pencil art sketches are signed "E. Hawthornthwaite." <br /> <br /> Ellen's sister's wrote the dedication inscription on the yellow right front flyleaf - "Ellen Hodgson The Gift of her affectionate Sister Marianne Hodgson. Jan. 20th. 1837." Most of the hand written inscriptions with dates were written in the early 1840's. Towards the back of the album is a pasted down inscription dated 1858. Also in the back of the album is an inscription difficult to transcribe - "These drawings the work of many a long laborious hour and the result of our united talent and perseverance are respectfully presented to Ellen Hodgson by the name not transcribed Artists first name spelling and Prim. Salkfeld Hall Jan. 20th." Salkfeld Hall is located in the village of Little Salkfeld Cumbria England. It was constructed in the 16th century. Confessions of a Mask tells the story of Kochan an adolescent boy tormented by his burgeoning attraction to men: he wants to be “normal.” Kochan is meek-bodied and unable to participate in the more athletic activities of his classmates. He begins to notice his growing attraction to some of the boys in his class particularly the pubescent body of his friend Omi. To hide his homosexuality he courts a woman Sonoko but this exacerbates his feelings for men. As news of the War reaches Tokyo Kochan considers the fate of Japan and his place within its deeply rooted propriety. Confessions of a Mask reflects Mishima’s own coming of age in post-war Japan.
