Turn of the Century American Boarding School Life Monson Academy Massachusetts Photo Album 1899 to 1901

1899171841899. Monson Academy student photo album circa 1899-1901 documenting coeducational secondary education and student identity at a Massachusetts preparatory institution during a period of expanding academic opportunities for both men and women. The album records individual students through formal portraiture providing evidence of enrollment class affiliation and institutional culture at one of the earliest coeducational academies in the United States. The material supports research on preparatory education gender integration in schooling and the development of academically oriented boarding institutions at the turn of the twentieth century.<br /> <br /> Photo album containing 43 original silver gelatin photographs including 25 cabinet sized portraits and 18 smaller prints primarily consisting of individual bust length student portraits with several group images. Many photographs include handwritten pencil annotations on the verso identifying sitters and class years such as "W. H. Ballard Class '01 M.A." The album is bound in an ornate leather cover with gilt and brown decorative elements and a central cameo portrait with pages arranged to display both larger and smaller format photographs. The images present male and female students in formal studio style compositions reflecting conventions of academic portraiture and documentation of student cohorts.<br /> <br /> Created at the turn of the twentieth century the album situates Monson Academy within broader developments in American education including the growth of coeducational institutions and preparatory training aligned with emerging scientific and technical fields. Founded in 1804 the academy later developed a reputation for preparing students for institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earlier admitted international students including Yung Wing who became the first Chinese graduate of an American university. The album provides a visual record of student populations within this institutional context documenting the presence of both men and women in a shared academic environment. Light wear to album with minor foxing to pages; photographs clear and well preserved; overall very good. 1884 album of original photographs of Roman scenes and art compiled by Bessie C. Howe for Mrs. Piatt's School Utica

1884H27613Utica NY 1884. Hardcover. Good. 8vo 8.5 x 6.75 inches half leather good with recent cloth over spine some general light rubbing and wear. With 42 original photos measuring approximately 5 x 3 inches each mainly of Roman scenes ruins at the Forum and other antiquities as well as interiors of art galleries and other landmarks and several of artworks; each photo is neatly captioned in ink by the pupil. We imagine that somehow the student in Utica sent away for these images from a professional photographic studio in Rome. Compiled by student Bessie C. Howe as part of a class in Mrs. Piatt's School which was chartered in Utica in 1837 as the Utica Female Academy but in later years was known as Mrs. Piatt's after the headmistress. The original building was burned to the ground in 1865. 1871 a new school opened in its place on Washington Street next to Westminster Presbyterian Church and in 1875 the school came to be known as "Miss Piatt's School" or the Utica "Fem Sem" a boarding and day school . Miss Piatt's would stand until 1908 when it became the YMCA. Miss Piatt's was well known for its discipline and academic excellence and drew students from all over the United States. It was unique for its time in that there were no exams or graduations: the school's motto was "Als Ikh Kan" which is Dutch forThe Best As I Can and each girl was expected to rise to the top of her capabilities. The curriculum consisted of classes in the fine arts music and domestic sciences and the expected length of study was 2 years. An advertisement in the Outlook a scholarly magazine of the day described the school as "delightfully situated in the hills of Central New York offering through college prep and general courses in music drawing and the domestic sciences: Individual training in all departments a modern gymnasium and unsurpassed advantages for winter outdoor life." The site is now occupied by the Central New York Veterans Building which was constructed in the 1950s. hardcover
