Gr.-4to (250 x 297 mm). Franch manuscript on paper. 37 double leaves. With calligraphic title, 4 watercoloured pen-and-ink maps, and 50 tables, mostly coloured double-page spreads. Contemporary half calf with giltstamped spine title, upper cover monogrammed "M. L." in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges red, layered with a gilt semé of crosses pattées. A charming, meticulously drawn, coloured and calligraphed historical atlas created by the young French aristocrat Marie Lichtenstein as a memento of her graduating class at the prestigious Collège Royale in Aix-en-Provence. The historical and genealogical tables are enclosed within red, blue, yellow, and green borders; a small crown is stamped beside the names of rulers . They include the dissolution of the Empire of Charlemagne, the history of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, and Romans, and the genealogies of the European ruling houses, including the "Dynastie Napoléonienne", several of the Byzantine Imperial families, and ultimately, their heirs and successors as Emperor of Constantinople, the Ottoman dynasty. The maps show the "Invasion des Barbares au 5 siècle" (with the "Arabes ou Sarasins" from the "Golfe Arabique" conquering Peria and southern Spain), a map of Europe showing the Empire of Charlemagne, Germany after the Treaty of Westfalia in 1648, and the administrative divisions of contemporary Spain. - Corners bumped, otherwise finely preserved.

4to (166 x 195 mm). German and Latin autograph manuscript on paper, signed at the end. (2), 158 ff. with 3 illustrations (on leaves 2r, 68v and 151v). Numerous contemporary manicules and pencil notes. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum over pasteboards. Hertodt's working alchemical notebook, written in a fluid mixture of German and Latin. The manuscript contains detailed instructions on alchemical processes, including the transmutation of lesser substances into gold (with first-person remarks on experiments), alongside a cryptographic alphabet and a list of inauspicious dates for the practice of alchemy. It is signed on the final page by its author "Dr. Hertodt" (f. 158r). - The first of the numerous recipes, experiment records, and alchemical notes is: "Ein gutt Particular gold zu machen" (f. 1r-v). We also find recipes with instructions on "Ein oleum Philosophorum zu bereiten" (f. 7r), "Crocum Martis [alchemical symbol for iron]" - ferric oxide (f. 9v), "Oleum sulphuris" - or fuming sulphuric acid (f. 10v), "Augmentum auris [alchemical symbol for gold]" (f. 18v), the process of coagulation of mercury (f. 23r), a recipe for making bismuth (f. 34r), "Ein schön und treffliche Particular Tinctur ex [alchemical symbols for iron, copper and gold] aus Fratri Basilii Valentini" (f. 35r), "die Venus [alchemical symbol for copper] zu transmutieren (f. 38r), the separation of gold from antimony (f. 63r), "Modus faciendi Cinabari", in Latin (f. 63v), the transcription of a cryptographic cipher (ff. 53v-54r), a list of days and months on which the alchemical process should not be performed (f. 80r/v), a recipe for flowers of antimony (by roasting and condensing white fumes), "Weise Flores [alchemical symbol for antimony] zu machen" (f. 82v) and instructions for making rosemary spirit ("hungarisches Wasser"), a popular early modern perfume (ff. 143v-144r). - Johann Ferdinand Hertodt von Todenfeld was a German physician from Moravia (now in Czechia). He wrote a series of monographs on medical and natural philosophical topics, including a geological and botanical description of his homeland, the "Tartaro Mastix Moraviae" (1669), and the "Crocologia" (1671), a medico-scientific treatise on saffron, translated into English with a biography of the author as recently as 2020. He later became personal physician to Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I and a member of the German National Academy of Sciences "Leopoldina" (cf. Ferguson I, 400). As a recognised authority in medical matters, it is no surprise to see Hertodt call on the learning of his colleagues in the present manuscript. Sigismundo Fueger, Swiss professor of alchemy, whose mines Paracelsus worked as a younger man, is mentioned on f. 25r, for example, as is the German alchemist Basilius Valentinus on f. 35r. - Apparently complete, with contemporary foliation (also used here), and an autograph signature of the author on the final page. Pages have varying numbers of lines, in a single hand switching fluidly between cursive German and humanist Latin scripts following switches between the two languages. Foxed and browned throughout, the text has fading between ff. 104v-142r owing to the quality of the ink. The manuscript offers a singular, hands-on perspective on the working life of a royal physician and scholar in the 17th century Habsburg lands.

Very Good French Original manuscript autograph document signed by Jean-Baptiste Annibal Aubert du Bayet. 31,5x20,5 cm. In French. 1 p. With a blind-stamped seal. A legible and fine handwritten letter. English: General Aubert du Bayet, Ambassador of the French Republic near the Othomane gate, the departure of the company of Artillery, light employee in the instruction of the Turks and that of the French officers previously employed or destined to the service of the great lord; Decrees that the citizen Collin, former major of the infantry who came to Constantinople after authorization from the government, will return to France shortly and that he will benefit for this purpose from the building which will lead the company of light artillery to Ancona [sic. Angora - Ankara]. Jean-Baptiste Annibal Aubert du Bayet (19 August 1759, Louisiana - 17 December 1797, Istanbul) was a French General and politician during the period of the French Revolution. Aubert du Bayet was born in Baton-Rouge in the French American colony of Louisiana in 1759. Aubert du Bayet participated in the campaigns in America during the American Revolutionary War. Aubert du Bayet arrived in France at the beginning of the Revolution, but was initially hostile to revolutionary ideas. While in Metz, as a young Captain, he published an anti-Jewish pamphlet entitled Le cri du citoyen contre les Juifs. However, he soon saw that it could serve his ambitions. He became a member of the legislature in 1791. Aubert du Bayet was President of the French National Assembly (the "Legislative Assembly") from 8 July 1792 to 22 July 1792. In 1793, he served as General of Brigade in the heroic defense of Mayence in 1793, when he finally had to surrender to the Prussian Army. He then seconded Hoche in Vendée in the fight against the Chouans in the War in the Vendée. He then became Minister of Defense of France ("Minister of War") from 3 November 1795 to 8 February 1796. In 1796, General Aubert du Bayet was appointed as ambassador ("Minister of the Republic") to the Ottoman Empire. He was sent to the Ottoman court with artillery equipment, and French artillerymen and engineers to help with the development of the Ottoman arsenals and foundries. Infantry and cavalry officers were also to train the Spahis and Janissaries, but they were frustrated by the opposition of the Janissaries. Ironically, some of these troops, trained to Western methods, were successfully employed against the French troops of Napoleon a few years later under Sir Sydney Smith at the Siege of Saint-Jean d'Acre in 1799. Their behaviour delighted Selim III, and upon their return, they were named Nizam-gedittes or "New Regulars", but they were eventually slaughtered and dispersed by the Janissaries and conservative clerics and politicians, leading to the deposition of Selim III. Aubert du Bayet died of fever in 1797, in Constantinople. Co-signed by six politic figures in its period, however, they cannot be determined. Very rare.
