18480The five on letterheads of the Walker Art Gallery City of Liverpool and dating between 27 November 1915 and 23 February 1916. The letters total 5pp. 4to; and 1p. 12mo. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. With stamps of the Royal Society of Arts. On the reverse of one letter are pencil notes presumably by Wood. The correspondence - brought about because of a monograph Dibdin is writing 'on the Liverpool 18th century artists' begins with an enquiry about the painting 'The Fishery' by Richard Wright in the Walker Gallery for which the artist received a premium of thirty guineas from the Royal Society of Arts and proceeds with discussion of the other Liverpool artists Peter Perez Burdett and William Tate with a final discussion regarding the Society of Artists. Dibdin's papers are in the British Library. The five on letterheads of the Walker Art Gallery, City of Liverpool, and dating between 27 November 1915 and 23 February 1916. unknown

Can you continue to come among us as it is for the purpose of making some arrangements and appointing an agent under the new act - As many of your plays have been written within the last ten years the act being so far retrospective it is to your interest to understand all its advantages - I undertook to write you on the subject and also to inform you that Douglas Jerrold and Thomas James Serle will become subscribers to your work. One copy each - Am very happy to hear that your list of names are sic increasing'. The final reference is to Dibdin's 'Last Lays of the Last Three Dibdins' 1833 a collection of 200 songs which according to the Oxford DNB he published 'encouraged by Bulwer-Lytton's copyright reform . under royal patronage and wide theatrical subscription'. Bound in quarter leather with acetate dust jacket slipcase. 79 3 pages. With an introduction by Renato Rabaiotti. First edition limited to 250 copies. Printed by Martino Mardersteig at the Stamperia Valdonega Verona on Magnani mould-made paper. A hitherto unpublished notebook reproduced in facsimile and accompanied by corresponding readings from the 1824 first edition of the Library Companion. It contains Dibdin's comments on books manuscripts and prints examined by him in the University Pepys St. John's College and Trinity College libraries. The introduction by the editor Renato Rabaiotti describes the events surrounding Dibdin's life in the 1820's and places the notebook in the perspective of Dibdin's career. There is also a current finding-list of the books manuscripts and prints Dibdin examined compiled by David McKitterick. Notation top left corner "F.66.Cole. CR". Text as follows: "The enclosed will prove to you that you are not forgotten. I am but just recovered from a dreadful illness which has shared one half of my person and two thirds of my purse: but the Tour Northern Counties and Scotland see full details below has been triumphant - and will I trust be profitable. I hope you continue well - . and that the dear bokes sic inclduing the Shakespeare and the Missals have escaped the Influenza. Shall we ever meety again - and will my fragile and tempest-beaten bark ever get again into smooth water I hope so. I think so. I am proud as I ought underlined to be of my new frioends and alliances in the North underlined. I have already got about £250 worth of sweet engravings and more to the tune of £800 are to follow. I do not forget the joyous days .". Dibdin reminds Davidge that at his 'first Anniversary Dinner' he expressed a great wish to serve Dibdin by his patronage but that 'absence from Town' prevented him. 'The Company were so well pleas'd that each present sign'd a Paper to come again - it is now fix'd for my Birthday the 21st. Inst and I take the freedom of enclosing you a List of the Patrons in the Hope I may be allow'd to add yours and enclose you a Ticket'. The cost is 'One Guinea each Transferable - Half presented to me & for the other Half the Landlord gives a very good Dinner and a Bottle of Wine & Desert'. Dibdin invites Davidge's 'Commands' 'in Memory of Auld lang Syne' Davidge was lessee of the Coburg and Surrey Theatres.
