Light foxing for first /-30 pages and sporadically to a few subsequent pages. Heavy foxing to rear end-paper and final page of indexes. Otherwise text very clean. A splendid copy First edition of the book which defined a golden age of book collecting epitomising an era of aristocratic collectors and great libraries focused on black-letter and early printing large paper and vellum copies. Dibdin's classic remains eminently readable and is held in high regard by modern collectors even those collecting in areas alien to Dibdin. 3 vols royal octavo 238 x 151 mm. With 37 plates as called for; an additional plate "Presentation in the Temple" was not ready at time of publication and is as usual not present here. Contemporary green straight-grain morocco spines gilt in compartments wide gilt border to covers broad gilt turn-ins pink endpapers gilt edges. Scattered minor rubbing skilfully retouched contents clean save for occasional light foxing bound without terminal imprint leaf in vol. I. An excellent copy. Light toning but very good. With an Autograph Note signed by Dibdin dated Jan. 25 1841 tipped to the front pastedown mended with clear tape.</p> <p> First Edition. "Dibdin's Bibliomania first published in 1809 is an anthem to the printed book a warning to the unwary about the perils of obsessive book-collecting and the confessions of a rabid book-collector" Danckwerts p. vii. Written in less than a month The Bibliomania marks "the first full flowering of Dibdin's love affair with books" Windle and Pippin p. 35; it had the effect of "producing much innocent mirth and exciting a general curiosity after rare and precious volumes" Dibdin Reminiscences of a Literary Life p. 272. Dibdin a clergyman and inveterate book-lover was a lively and engaging writer whose works enjoyed great popularity and helped to stimulate enthusiasm for book collecting in the nineteenth century. The autograph note tipped into this copy reads: "Good Mr. Warren If I had not been cheated of £37.10 that Monday you would have had your £5 with fresh boards last week. Neat repair to small tear on title-page. End-papers browned. Considerable wear to covers – rubbing splitting and some marks corners heavily worn with loss of leather and board. Binding firm however. Ink and pencil annotations to front and rear end-papers Internally very clean with minor staining to pages 28-33.</p><p>Ex-library book with library sticker to inside front cover. Library stamp to title-page and library markings on spine.<br /><br /></p><p>Dibdin wrote a good portion of this weekly which lasted only 24 numbers. The philanthropist Thomas Bernard and Dibdin were associated together on this publication. Dibdin said that he wrote two thirds of the magazine.
