The advertised intention of 'The Library Companion' was to provide a guide to the best books for study and reference in all parts of learning seasoned with literary and bibliophilic anecdotes. But his passions for the rare and curious diverted Dibdin from these worthy aims and as one of his friends remarked he once again 'became rampant' on editions typography illustrations bindings and rare book prices. However the modern reader will find a good many interesting details about books collectors and book trade personalities of the time. c.f.
