Near fine. 16mo 260pp. A crisp clean near fine copy in contemporary or slightly later 3/4 polished light brown calf over marbled boards. Contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down. Corners gently rounded and the leather somewhat dried but the black morocco spine label and gilt remain bright. Fresh and clean internally. Surprisingly scarce volume filled with lyrics by the English composer and songwriter. Dibdin's brother was similarly talented as was his son and his first cousin was Thomas Frognall Dibdin the noted English bibliographer and book collector. Barton Townsend whose collection of color-plate books was auctioned in 1919 and in the second that of Cruikshank bibliographer Alfred M. Cohn whose collection was auctioned in 1920. Dibdin's treatment of the Paris printing and bookselling scene in his Bibliographical Tour provoked this translation and annoyed response in the preface and footnotes from the great printer Crapelet who took exception to numerous aspects of Didbin's account including the praise reserved for Crapelet himself. Dibdin published a response to Crapelet's pamphlet the same year. <br/><br/>The half-title reads: "Voyage Pittoresque en France et en Allemagne Relatif a la Bibliographie et aux Antiquités par le Rev. Boards covered with glazed cartonnage gilt noted by Windle & Pippin p134 as an original binding.<br /><br />Loss of cartonnage to the spine. Corners bumped<br />and rounded with loss. Heavy foxing to inner-covers end-papers and throughout text to varying degrees. Fair condition for a very rare item.<br /><br />The first of three French responses to Dibdin's Tour in France and Germany comprising of a translation of Dibdin's thirtieth letter from his Tour. What marks this publication out is the introduction written by the Parisian printer Georges Crapelet contesting Dibdin's veracity on occasions and criticising his general writing style as being too concerned with effect and over-complicated " Il vise singulièrement à l'effet ne dit jamais rien simplement ".</p><p>Crapelet contrasts Dibdin's petulance and perpetual enthusiasm with the patience and contemplation he argues is necessary for bibliographical studies.</p><p>That being said he also 'tips his printer's hat' to the quality of Dibdin's book production in paricular his abundant use of illustrations in his publications.</p><p><br />Windle & Pippin A39.</p><p><br /><strong>As a high value item shipping costs will be greater than the average quoted.
