Illustrated with 200 photo etchings by Arthur Lumley 1837-1912 who was the first artist sent to the Army of the Potomac by Leslies to cover the Civil War. Landon 1839-1910 was among the foremost humorists of his day although Twain disliked him as a writer. Supposedly a series of letters written in the future from Saratoga NY. Many appearing first I the NY Commercial Advertiser and here "pruned enriched with suitable additions." Corners spine cap are only slightly frayed front fly leaf with a one inch piece missing at top corner almost no foxing. OW a bright tight and Good scarce and humorous title. No markings. There is moderate foxing of the title page and first few leaves. Rest of interior has minimal foxing. A pencil mark is seen in the margin of p.9. No other issues. Paginates: title 1-222 lacking original blanks. Essentially a very cool reading copy. It is pocket size at a little over 6 inches tall. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: if you have ever found yourself slogging through a Melville novel then you can reset your experience by reading this novel. This is wonderful reading. Terrific descriptions of a place and way of life that no longer exist. Recommended. More Notes: this is a bibliographically complex title. A novel by Scottish novelist and poet George John Whyte- Melville 1821-1878 Major George John Whyte-Melville was born in 1821 at Mount Melville near St Andrews. He was a son of Major John Whyte-Melville and Lady Catherine Anne Sarah Osborne and a grandson on his mother's side of the 5th Duke of Leeds. His father was a well-known sportsman and Captain of St Andrews Golf Club. George was educated at Eton entered the army in 1839 became captain in the Coldstream Guards in 1846 and retired in 1849. He married The Hon Charlotte Hanbury-Bateman in 1847 and they had one daughter Florence Elizabeth who went on to marry Clotworthy John Skeffington 11th Viscount Massereene and 4th Viscount Ferrard. In original cloth binding. Externally a trifle rubbed with wear to the extremities including a closed tear to the joint. Internally generally firmly bound with a few pages working loose. Pages are clean and bright throughout. Good Only Chapman and Hall hardcover
