Elaborately gilt decorated full morocco binding -- the decoration on the boards is inspired by Renaissance bindings more than anything else. This is a publisher's binding and we think quite unusual for a book of this sort especially. 8vo. 23 by 15.5 cm. 776 pp. Two plates one being the frontis each with cameo portraits of the authors and other humorists. Two octavo volumes 7 5/8 x 4 9/16 inches; 194 x 116 mm. iv 2 contents 322; iv 315 1 blank pp.<br> <br> Later half dark blue calf over marbled boards. Spines elaborately tooled in blind and gilt. Red and green morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. Top edge red. Newer endpapers. Some occasional finger smudging. Otherwise a near fine copy.<br> <br> The manuscript was refused by Murray Colbour and Moxon before Bentley offered two hundred pounds for the English rights to print 1000 copies. The American edition is subsequent to the English. Sometime in 1853 Bentley in an effort to stimulate sales of Melville's books ordered the remainder sheets of Redburn The White Jacket and The Whale bound up in uniform red cloth bindings with cancel title-pages.<br> <br> "The book contains an account of Melville's experiences subsequent to those related in Omoo as a sailor aboard the United States Frigate United States from which he received his discharge in Boston in October 1844" Minnegerode M. Some Personal Letters of Herman Melville and A Bibliography p. 155.<br> <br> The work that immediately preceded Moby Dick.<br> <br> In White-Jacket "Melville reveals his distaste for the brutal and inhumane practices of the ship officers in a realistic account of life aboard a U.S. Navy man-of-war. Some of the flogging scenes later persuaded Congress to abolish that punishment. The white jacket for which the narrator is named symbolic of his isolation and innocence threatens to drown the hero when he falls from the mast into the water. Regaining his buoyancy White Jacket frees himself from the jacket and rises to the surface while the hated garment sinks forever. First edition first printing with p.iii containing an extract from Fuller's Good Sea-Captain; p.iv a Note dated New York March 1850; p.361 with the missigned Q; and p.433 with the signature mark T not present. Melville's fifth book which is based on his fourteen months service in the United States Navy aboard the frigate USS "Neversink" actually the USS United States. At the urging of New Hampshire Senator John P. Hale who was inspired by Melville's "vivid description of flogging a brutal staple of 19th century naval discipline" in this novelized memoir the United States Congress banned the practice on all U.S. ships in September 1850. Octavo: 465 1 blank 6 ads pp. The original blind-stamped brown cloth binding has been rebacked with the original spine strip laid down and the yellow coated endpapers intact. 1850192491New York: Harper & Brothers 1850. The book which inspired change in the US Navy First US edition. The novel was inspired by Melville's time in the US Navy and was instrumental in the September 1850 act abolishing flogging in the Navy. The novel was published whilst the senate was already debating the use of flogging. The publisher sent a copy of the book to every member of congress and its graphic descriptions of flogging helped contribute to the ban. Melville published the novel in London earlier the same year to protect his copyright. In 1849 he travelled to England aiming to sell the book in person to an English publisher where it was eventually accepted by Richard Bentley. Octavo. With 6. pp publisher's adverts. Original green cloth spine lettered in gilt boards stamped in blind yellow coated endpapers. Bookplate of American banker Albert Henry Wiggin 1868-1951. But for some very isolated minor foxing and a few negligible marginal smudges a very good set. No half-titles are called for. First edition second issue with the cancel titles dated "1853." The original London printing which preceded the U.S. edition by two months consisted of only one thousand sets. As a consequence of their tepid sales in 1853 Bentley bound up remaining sets of sheets of this title of REDBURN and of THE WHALE in several forms of remainder cloth bindings including two-and three- volumes in one format with cancel titles bearing the new date. In the remainder format both due to the somewhat smaller quantities issued thus as well as to the exceptionally vulnerable multi-volume in one format they are much less often seen than the primary issues.
