71325bdGarden City: Doubleday & Company Inc. n.d. Octavo hardcover full-color illustrated cream boards 44 pp. Near-Fine. Illustraitons throughout. “There was once a velveteen rabbit an in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white he had real thread whiskers and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy’s stocking with a sprig of holly between his paws the effect was charming. There were other things in the stocking nuts and oranges and a toy engine and chocolate almonds and a clockwork mouse but the Rabbit was quite the best of all. For at least two hours the Boy loved him and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten. 19852303822New York: Oxford University Press 1985. First Edition. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Jacket lightly toned jacket price clipped. 1985 Hard Cover. xiv 253 pp. "The Washington Post has called Martin Williams "the most knowledgeable open-minded and perceptive American jazz critic today" and countless others share that sentiment. To Gary Giddins of the Village Voice he is "one of the most distinguished critics of anything this country has ever produced: and Nat Hentoff has observed "Martin Williams persistently gets at essences and that is why he has contributed so much to the very small body of authentic jazz criticism." A companion volume to his seminal prizewinning The Jazz Tradition this book is divided into four sections. The opening part is a collection of reviews and critiques of figures as diverse as Fats Waller and Count Basie Bud Powell and Bill Evans Ella Fitzgerald and the World Saxophone Quartet. The second section shows us musicians at work during rehearsals recording dates nightclub performances; these include Miles Davis Gerry Mulligan Duke Ellington Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman. In a rare feature for a book on jazz the third section brings together some of Williams's "liner notes"--record annotations from outstanding LP albums by musicians from Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver through Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins and including Cecil Taylor. In the last section Williams discusses some of the pboblems jazz has encountered as it has acquired intellectual and academic status and there are some provocative comments on the black contribution to American musical theatre and whether or not the United States has a true folk music. 198961757bdBaton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press 1989. Octavo blue cloth hardcover gilt letters 345 pp. Fine in a Near-Fine mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: General P. G. T. Beauregard’s military career in many ways is more significant to the student of the Civil War than the record of any other general for he was in every phase of thewar from its beginning to its end. He fired the opening gun of the great drama at Fort Sumter; he commanded the Confederate forces at Manassas; he planned and fought the first great battle in the West at Shiloh; he conducted the defense of Charleston from attack by sea and in the waning months of the war he directed the defense of the southern apporaches to Richmond. Following First Manassas Beauregard became the hero of the South. The people of the Confederacy saw him through a haze of glory and drama that enveloped no other Southern general. He was chivalric and arrogant in the best Southern tradition but he was more. To Beauregard war was something that was learned from books and fought in conformity to a fixed pattern. His strategic ideas were derived entirely from Jomini and Napoleon and from his studies of these two masters he evolved certain principles of war to which he held rigidly. Yet all of his plans of over-all strategy and many of his battle plans were rejected by his superiors. Louisiana State University Press, (1989). hardcover books
