Good. <br/><br/> Johann Rapp founded the Harmony Society a Christian theosophy and pietist society in Germany in 1785. Persecuted by the Lutheran Church and the government he moved the group to the United States in 1803. Rapp's followers were called Harmonists or Rappites. They settled in Pennsylvania for a time relocated to Indiana for several years and eventually resettled in Pennsylvania in a town they named Economy after the idea of Divine Economy. <br/> Rapp led the commune with all property held in common and celibacy required. Eventually as seems inevitable for Utopian societies arguments erupted schisms followed and the Society splintered. This book gives a detailed history of the Society its religious principles and customs. It "includes a chapter on this Society's earlier establishment in Indiana" Howes. Presented by the author and Howard University professor to Steen a popular biographer and novelist of the time whose critical epic of the slave trade The Sun is my Undoing had been released only one year before and by this time had become a best-seller in the UK and US. Williams would go on to become the first Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago 1962-1981.<br/><br/>Williams began his academic career at Oxford University where he earned his PhD with a doctoral thesis titled The Economic Aspects of the Abolition of the Slave Trade and West Indian Slavery later published as a book Capitalism and Slavery in 1944. Like the recipient of this copy he spent much of his career making historical arguments for the inhumanity of slavery; yet his work also drew attention to the economic rather than humanistic factors that led to abolition. "In 1939 he went to the United States and joined the faculty of social and political science at the noted HBCU Howard University. While he was at Howard Williams became associated with the Caribbean Commission that was established by the US Great Britain France and the Netherlands in an effort to coordinate the economic development of the Caribbean" Britannica. This work directly contributed both to the present book and to his future role as Prime Minister. Here Williams encourages a stronger cultural bond between those of African and West Indian descent whose current geographical economic political and personal situations were shaped by the slave trade. Ted Williams was a baseball player and manager who played his entire 19-year Major League Baseball career as a left fielder for the Boston Red Sox from 1939 to 1942 and 1946 to 1960 excepting service time during World War II and the Korean War. Nicknamed "The Kid" "The Splendid Splinter" "Teddy Ballgame" and "The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived" Williams is regarded as one of the greatest players in baseball history. Williams was also an outstanding fielder especially in the difficult left field of Fenway Park in Boston where he played his entire Major League career at that position. Williams was a seventeen-time All-Star a two-time recipient of the American League Most Valuable Player Award a six-time American League batting champion and a two-time Triple Crown winner. He finished his playing career with a .344 batting average 521 home runs and a 0.482 on-base percentage the highest of all time. The Year Book adds entries on an equally striking variety of subjects including chess Old Edinburgh taverns whale fishing the life and songs of Walther von der Vogelweide witches "Lawless Day" at Exeter morris dancing the Riding of Lanark Marches booksellers of Little Britain "a Chinese tea-man's shop-bill" and an array of biographical and historical notes along with astronomical agricultural almanac and medical information while continuing with the generous helpings of poetry and illustrations seen in the previous volumes. => Americana content is not lacking with entries appearing e.g. on Niagara Falls and "Penn and the Indians."<br>Â Â Â Â "These publications were at once popular educational quaint and socially pertinent" says the DNB. The earliest published county atlas for Oregon with extremely detailed maps of the various townships showing ownership of the various plots of land railroads roads physical features etc. The lithographed views depict many of the farms of the region public buildings including the State Capitol in Salem and a handful of private residences. Richard Montgomery of the Continental Army was descended. It includes a large folding table showing the family tree. With the bookplate of Richard Montgomery Gilchrist Potter on the front pastedown and his notes indicating: "This copy belonged to J. Hammond Trumbull. A letter authenticating this provenance and mentioning a faulty 1st issue of this edition to Trumbull from D. Williams Patterson was stolen from me while at the binders." Trumbull was a Connecticut scholar and philologist who held several state government positions in his lifetime and was the librarian of the Watkinson Library. This copy stands out however as it includes a heartfelt inscription from Williams to his boyhood friend and fellow book collaborator Tom Wasmuth here referred to as 'Toom". The Harmony Society had its origins in Germany in the mid-1780s under the leadership of Johann Georg Rapp 1757-1847. The organization moved to the United States in 1804 and established three settlements before its formal dissolution in 1905. The Harmonites were pietist Separatists and non-violent pacifists who believed that the Second Coming of Christ would occur within their lifetimes. The report includes testimony from about thirty witnesses and others with knowledge of the relationship between the accused James M. Williams and the man he shot Vanness Wyatt. "There was apparently bad blood between the victim and prisoner for they reached for weapons on meeting on a road and Wyatt was killed.
