1886604544New Orleans: E. A. Brandao & Co 1886. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. 12mo. 53pp. Printed wrappers. Title on the tile page has been neatly canceled in a contemporary hand and replaced with "The Last Witch." Gray wrappers toned with foxing and soil each with a small chip cover partially separated with a penciled note a very good copy of a relatively delicate publication. The text has been nicely preserved. "Witchcraft-copyright 1882-Author's printed copy-Not published" printed on title page. <br /> <br /> A very uncommon play set in Salem in 1693 by a once well-known Louisiana poet and playwright. Williams was born in 1852 and seems to have called New Orleans home for most of his life. According to a biography accompanying a collection of his material at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Williams came from a prominent family with a history in education and law. He started writing while pursuing a career in banking and insurance. He printed his first play Eugene Aram when he was 22 and wrote for the rest of his life. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe but "always considered New Orleans his home." According the biography his plays and librettos were produced in London Los Angeles San Francisco New York Chicago and St. Louis. In 1902 his tragedy Unorna was produced in London making him the first New Orleanian to have a play produced in the city. He was also the first New Orleans author to have his work produced by the Metropolitan Opera Company his comic opera A Royal Joke in 1901. He was both the only Louisiana playwright listed in Who's Who in America from 1885 to 1920 and the only author from Louisiana listed in the 1905 edition of A Dictionary of American Authors. We also note that while nearly all of his plays that we locate were published in New Orleans he did have a book of poems The Dream of Art and Other Poems published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1892.<br /> <br /> There have been a few 20th century surveys of his life and career most notably by Louisiana playwright and scholar Paul T. Nolan who published several books and articles on Williams but he remains an understudied figure. A rare play with an interesting theme he seemed to often dip into history for his subjects by a once well-known Louisiana playwright. OCLC locates only six physical copies. E. A. Brandao & Co unknown

The owner of this scarce pamphlet was Thomas S. McClelland a prominent lawyer in Chicago. Born in PA he graduated Williams in 1864 and almost immediately joined the Union Army. Called "Honest Tom" by his classmastes he was over 6' tall "straight as an Indian and almost as swarthy." He missed the reunion and does not appear in the photograph. Those that do are identified on p. 4. In the photo they appear to be a substanial and quietly prosperous group. Most are dressed in frock coats holding their top hats and bowlers. Williams College is a private liberal arts college located in Williamstown MA. It was established in 1793 with funds from the estate of Ephraim Williams and was originally open only to men. The leading supporter of "free silver" against the gold standard and a champion of the "little guy" against moneyed Eastern businessmen and bankers Bryan came closest to victory in 1896.</p> <b>WILLIAMS JENNING BRYAN.</b><i>"The Issue--1900: Liberty Justice Humanity."</i> Columbus Ohio Neville Williams 1900. Chromolithograph printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company Cincinnati Ohio. 20 x 30 in; edges slightly trimmed very faint mat toning; laid down on canvas.<p>Surrounding the central vignette of the candidate flanked by American flags nearly every theme of Bryan's long political career is represented in fantastic graphics. Quotes from his 1896 "Cross of Gold" speech on monetary policy and the free coinage of silver surround his name; a rooster and plow reveal his appeal to the nation's long-suffering Midwestern farmers; and "Blind Justice" looks longingly at Bryan's portrait. A bronze liberty bell dated 1776 juxtaposes a silver one labeled "1900 No Imperialism."</p><p>Below a white-clad Lady Democracy fashioned as a Jael-style avenger prepares to destroy monopolistic trusts by hacking the tentacles off an octopus that protects large American industries such as the U.S. Biscuit Company American Tobacco the American Steel Trust and perennial progressive punching bag Standard Oil. An octopus representing monopolies dates to the early 1880s but gained traction in the early years of the 1900s notably in <i>Puck</i> magazine's famous 1904 cartoon of Standard Oil's tentacles surrounding the U.S. Capitol building.</p><p>The anti-imperialist plank is shown by figures representing Cuba Mexico and probably the Philippines appealing to the Statue of Liberty shouting "give us liberty or give us death" paraphrasing Patrick Henry's famous line. The print itself boldly proclaims "Equal Rights to All Special Privileges to None."</p><p><b>William Jennings Bryan</b> 1860-1925 of Nebraska was a powerful orator and prominent populist who failed in bids for the presidency in 1896 1900 and 1908. His support for farmers and laborers led him to oppose trusts and seek monetary trade tariff and railroad rate regulation. After his third presidential bid he became Woodrow Wilson's Secretary of State in 1913. A pacifist in 1915 Bryan resigned after Wilson began to move towards fighting Germany in WWI after the sinking of the <i>Lusitania</i>. Bryan supported Prohibition and was an ardent anti-Darwinist. He died in 1925 five days after the conclusion of the Scopes Monkey Trial where he defended Tennessee's anti-evolutionary position.</p> books
