Edition limited to 170 copies this out-of-series and unsigned but see below printed at the Cummington Press October 1951 to March 1952 by Wightman Williams "who cut the woodblocks and Harry Duncan who set the type" 4to pp. xxviii; printed in red blue and black; original full parchment gilt lettering on spine; publisher's slipcase; with an extra suite of 3 woodcuts and a title page in folder. One of the woodcuts in the extra suite is torn but without loss. From the library of Kim Merker mentee of Harry Duncan. The first 12 of the edition numbered I-XII were issued on Umbria paper with hand-colored illustrations. Such is the case here even though this copy is unnumbered. This manuscript 209 lines of blank verse described as item no. vii in the Keynes bibliography of Blake. "Translation probably by Hayley of the opening lines of Tasso's Le sette giornate del mondo creato . Blake was merely the amanuensis" Bentley Blake Bibliography 1964 p. 48. First edition. 16 mo. 6 1/8" x 4" original green pebbled cloth titles stamped in gilt on the front cover 143 pp. includes front and rear pastedown sheets preface illustrated maps advertisements. index. A finely illustrated travel and business guide to Colorado the third such annual volume. Contains listings and descriptions of railroad routes towns and cities resorts banks businesses agriculture hotels etc. The description of each town is accompanied by a brief business directory of the "leading trades" in the vicinity. Included are maps of Boulder with gold and copper regions noted Golden and Pueblo. There is a "Birds Eye View of Denver in 1870" plus many illustrated advertisements for local merchants such as bankers newspapers dentists jewelers hotels real estate agents etc. Herd 524 lists the 1871 issue as "rare" and "Copy seen in the Rollins Collection Princeton University" but he missed the 1872 and 1873 editions. Former owner's inked name at top of front pastedown sheet one signature block loosened but holding spine ends and corners are lightly rubbed else a very good copy of a scarce book. J. A. Blake & F. First edition thus publisher Arnold Fawcus's copy copy A of 26 lettered copies reserved for the Trustees of the William Blake Trust and the Publishers in full morocco with a set of proofs showing the progressive states of the collotype process from a total edition of 662 copies on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake. This copy is from the Trianon Press Archive from the estate of Trianon publisher and founder Arnold Fawcus. Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes 1887-1982 the brother of Maynard provides a commentary and bibliographical history. He summarizes the gnomic intent of Blake's early tractate: "Blake identifies the Poetic Genius that is God with 'Divine Humanity'. Man is therefore uniform yet with infinite variety in the individuals. All men thus derived from a universal Poetic Genius have but one religion though each nation has its difference beliefs according to its needs". Quarto. Facsimile plates thoughout achieved by collotype some with watercolour washes applied by hand. Original green full morocco titles to spine gilt. With the original marbled slipcase. Blake's illustrations for the Book of Job were considered one of the highpoints of his work and also provided one of his few commercial successes. It was originally published in 1826 and the plates in this very scarce volume are reduced facsimiles taken directly from that edition. Handsomely bound in contemporary full diced russia with gilt tooling and titles to the spine and rolled gilt rules to the boards and turn-ins. All edges marbled. Each volume with a silk page marker. Illustrated with 37 engraved plates after original designs by Henry Fuseli including two engraved by William Blake Romeo and Juliet Henry VIII. A very good set indeed the bindings square and firm with minor rubbing and wear to the joints a little bumping to the corners and a dent to the head of the upper board of volume IV. The contents with a discrete ninenteenth-century French ink ownership stamp for "A.A. Beaujour Rots" to each title page and the very occasional dot of foxing are otherwise clean and bright throughout. A splendid set. A most attractive edition of Shakespeare's works with a wonderful suite of illustrations by the Romantic artist Henry Fuseli including two engraved by William Blake. In October 1805 Blake was commissioned by the publisher Cromek to prepare 40 drawings for the poem. The established writer Henry Blake Fuller tried several commercial publishers before resorting to a friend with a small press to get his comic novel in print. Despite the discretion with which Fuller handled his theme the book was received uneasily by reviewers and sold poorly. At the time of this publication Blake remain fairly obscure with little known of his life.Blake was a Romantic poet and painter a seminal figure of the era. He wrote prophetic works though he was largely unrecognised during his lifetime.Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece twenty-three plates and many in-text engravings.Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece twenty-three plates and many in-text engravings.The illustrations are from Blake's own works done in facsimile by W. J. Linton.Collated complete.Gilchrist's biography remains a standard reference work on Blake however he died before the work was published. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Spines are a little faded. Light rubbing to the boards and spines including to the gilt. A few minor marks to the cloth. Small chip to the front joint and front board of Volume II and to the rear joint of Volume I. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down of Volume I.
