108768Chichester: J. Seagrave for T. Cadell and W. Davies 1803. Small 8vo xii 165 pp with 6 plates designed by Maria Flaxman and engraved by Blake. A poor copy 4 of the plates in good condition but an extensive stain from pages 1 to 40 affects an oval area of about 1 cm x 2 cm to the left of the first plate at page 2 and a decreasing area up to page 40. There are also two small stains to the edge of plate 5 on the lower left margin one just intruding into the print area. Old mottled calf decorated and gilt ruled spine generally distressed and with darker 2 cm band across the front cover possibly a old damp stain. Â§ First edition with Blakeâ€™s plates. DNB notes: â€œPossibly his greatest achievement however was his didactic poem Triumphs of Temper 1781 which â€˜was to reform the entire feminine mind of England by the adviceâ€™ Bishop 53. This allegorical work aspired in rhyming couplets to teach young women the virtues of a pleasant nature. Its advice was heeded by some: Emma Hamilton thanked Hayley â€˜for the lessons she had learnt from the poemâ€™ p.Jaffe Drawings by George Romney 1978 44 and asked Romney to inform Hayley that his poem â€˜made me Lady H. â€¦ for Sir W. minds more temper than beautyâ€™ ibid. "The Book of Ahania" is one of Blake's lesser-known works and is generally agreed to be a continuation of "The Book of Urizen" with Ahania being the feminine manifestation of Urizen signifying pleasure. According to Geoffrey Keynes' Description this text " .along with "The Book of Los" were some of the last of the series of Illuminated Books completed by Blake while living in Lambeth. The manner of their execution suggest that he was wearying with the effort of making the splendid books that preceded them and was seeking for a less laborious method of production. Blake completed only one copy of each book and then laid them aside as if dissatisfied with his experiment. He never included either of them in any list of his productions and is not known to have disposed of them to any customer or patron. They therefore remained unknown until late in the nineteenth century." William Blake 1757-1827 is arguably the most original and highly-regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work.
