Blake had launched his own career publishing <i>The Book of Thel </i>and <i>The Marriage of Heaven and Hell </i>by this time and started taking on commercial book illustrating and engraving jobs such as Mary Wollstonecraft's <i>Original Stories from Real Life</i> 1791 and <i>Fables</i> 1793. <br /><br />Plates newly engraved by Blake William Grainger Philip Audinet Peter Mazell William Skelton Lovegrove Wilson and Cook after original designs by John Wootton William Kent and Hubert Francois Gravelot from the 1729-1747 editions. <br /><br />With the List of Subscribers and one page advertisement in rear. With the three engraved vignettes engraved by Blake Volume I pages 127 206 and 225 as well as a full-page plate engraved by Blake after Rubens V.I opposite page 159. <br/><br/>A Very Good set overall with light to moderate foxing near the plates most text leaves are generally in excellent shape. <br/><br/>Lavater 1741-1801 "was the last and most influential of the descriptive physiognomists a class of pseudo-scientists who attempted to ascertain character on the basis of physical features.Von der Physiognomik 1772 an unillustrated two volume book was Lavater's first work on the subject; this was later expanded with the help of Goethe into the four-volume Physiognomische Fragmente 1775-1778 and further perfected in a French translation Essais sur la physiognomie.supervised by Lavater himself. Lavater's physiognomy differed from those of his predecessors in that he paid special attention to the structure of the head particularly the forehead—a form of psychological indexing that exerted some influence on the development of phrenology and brain localization theories in the early nineteenth century. Robert Blake 1598 - 1657 was one of the pre-eminent British admirals and naval tacticians of the 17th century the chief contributor to Britain's naval supremacy who built the largest British navy of the day and whose talents are thought to rival or surpass those of Lord Nelson. <br /> <br /> Blake made the first set of rules and regulations for the Navy 'The Laws of War and Ordinances of the Sea' and wrote about his new methods for conducting naval blockades and landings a significant revision of the existing naval tactics 'Sailing instructions and Fighting Instructions'. Blake's naval experience included battles in the English Civil War the Anglo Dutch War and the Anglo Spanish War. <br /> <br /> Engraved by M. V de Gucht. Part I 'The Economy of Vegetation' involves a far-reaching survey of science and technology with significant sections on evolutionary theories and numerous footnotes on electrical phenomena. Part II 'The Love of the Plants' is a 'single-minded catalogue of vegetable sex-life"" Norman. Darwin describes plant reproduction according to the Linnaean system ""by means of a most ingenious and amusing personification of each plant and often even of the parts of the plant. It is significant that botanical notes are added to the poem and that its eulogies of scientific men are frequent"" Britannica. Darwin's Garden is also important for the five plates in Part I engraved by William Blake: ""The Fertilization of Egypt"" engraved after the painting by Henry Fuseli and four engravings of the Portland Vase. Darwin the grandfather of Charles is notable for his ""exposition of the form of evolutionism afterwards expounded by Lamarck"" DNB.
