Owner's name stamp inside each volume. Tiny closed tear in front endpaper of volume 1. Inch-long puncture in spine of volume 2 not affecting the integrity of the binding. Back cover of volume 2 is vertically creased; milder crease in front cover of volume 4. Air bubbles under cloth on volume 3 which also has a small ink drip stain on the spine. Small nick in cloth on edge of volume 4's front cover. A few of the folding maps have closed tears but most are totally intact. Text unmarked and binding tight across the set. Very good condition overall. An important contemporary account of the American Civil War by a prince of the deposed House of Orleans a grandson of Louise Philippe of France. Philippe le Comte de Paris came to the United States to volunteer for the Union Army in 1861 where he served on the staff of General McClellan until July 1862. He later returned to Europe where he was floated as a potential candidate for restoration of the monarchy in France. However he spent much of his later life in exile in the United Kingdom. This four-volume history is complete with numerous folding maps of Civil War battlefields and forts. This edition published across 1875-1888. Porter & Coates hardcover

Plate 55 from Vandermaelen's monumental 'Atlas Universel' showing the New South Wales coast from around Batemans Bay to the Solitary Islands. Sydney the Blue Mountains and hinterland are shown including much of the Lachlan River. Vandermaelen's atlas was 'the first world atlas on a uniform scale. The sixth volume covered "Océanique" and it included seventeen maps of Australia. Paris : Felix Locquin 1841.</p><p>The work is divided into two parts. The first part pp.1-138 is formed by the translation of Blandin's original work where it deals with the main accidents that can happen in an operating room grouping them into three main families:</p><p>1 Nervous accidents</p><p>2 Bleeding accidents</p><p>3 Spontaneous introduction of air into the veins</p><p>The second part pp139-289 is represented by the commentary accompanied by explanatory illustrations by the doctor Alessandro Foresti who is also responsible for the translation of the original work.</p><p>Foresti bases his comment on the theory that most of the accidents in the operating room are due to a lack of knowledge of human anatomy by most of the surgeons and reports several real cases in support of his thesis enriching the treatise with explanatory images.</p><p>The second work initially published as the 4th part of the <em>Collezione di monografie memorie tesi ec. estratte dal repertorio medico-chirurgico-ostetrico che si pubblica a Bruxelles sotto la direzione di una società di medici / compilata e tradotta dal D. Niccola Orsini </em>but often given the heterogeneity of the topics of the 4 treatises bound individually it is a dermatology treatise on Erispela by the French doctor and writer Lepelletier Almire.</p><p>Lepelletier summarized the main current opinions of his times on the disease its causes symptoms possible complications and the main methods proposed for its treatment.</p><p>Erysipelas from the Greek εÏυσίπελας - red skin is an acute skin infection involving the deep dermis and partly the hypodermis caused by pyogenic bacteria; the main culprit is group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus but sometimes staphylococcus aureus or other less common germs are involved.</p><p>CONDITION: Light foxing along the volumes due to the quality of the paper but a good copy of a fascinating collection of extremely rare medical treatise.</p> Passigli paperback

Title pages printed in red and black; front pastedowns with bookplate of Sir James Dunn. ◆Hint of rubbing to bottom edges upper covers with a handful of small lights scratches and tiny nicks half-title in volume I a little loose but in excellent condition the contents pristine and obviously never read.<br/> <br/> In the introduction to the present edition Whibley says that the translation "is a masterpiece untouched by age"--a description equally applicable to the book itself whose contents have scarcely been touched. The French courtier Comines ca. 1445 - ca. 1511 chronicles the reign of Louis XI and the Italian expedition of Charles VIII covering most of the three decades beginning in 1464. The work comprises the first critical and philosophical history to be written after antiquity and it earned for Comines the appellation of "father of modern history." Britannica says that "the graphic style of his narrative and above all the keenness of his insight into the motives of his contemporaries an insight undimmed by undue regard for principles of right and wrong make this work one of the great classics of history." Our translation by Danett the first in English was originally published in 1596 and the present edition uses the 1601 version which includes a life of Comines. The introduction by Charles Whibley gives a biography of Comines and an analysis of his style and ideas. Danett fl. 1566-1601 also translated from various authors a sequel to Comines' work and an epitome of descriptions of the Low Countries drawn from the works of Guicciardini. A waterstain affects the lower margin of the initial leaves gradually fading throughout the volume. Unique and uncommon edition the purported 1814 edition is a bibliographical ghost. The plate depicts the explosion in the roadstead of Walmer of the Danish brig ""La Dorothée"". This experiment was the work of Robert Fulton; indeed most of this very rare memoir is dedicated to the research and discoveries of the great American scientist who died in 1815. Jacques-Philippe Mérigon de Montgéry 17821839 frigate captain and member of the Naval Works Council took part in numerous campaigns and naval battles between 1794 and 1827 Ireland Concarneau South Seas La Spezia the Levant and Black Sea Senegal Guiana the West Indies the United States England. ""Montgéry developed a passionate interest in steam navigation and more broadly in scientific and technical studies As a member of the Naval Works Council he frequently visited ports to examine various technical matters A highly original mind closely connected with Auguste Comte Montgéry produced a substantial body of work often demonstrating prophetic insight far ahead of the achievements of his time.""
