180813510London: Published by I. & W. Macgavin No. 107 New Bond Street 1808. Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove Whatman paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 13 5/8 x 20 1/4 inches. A dramatic view of fishermen at Worthing from Philippe Loutherbourg's great work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain".

This impressive aquatint is plate six of Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This accomplished text is comprised of six large aquatint views engraved after Loutherbourg's acclaimed paintings. The work which was first engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler was later re-engraved in 1808 by J. Hill. Reminiscent of Rowlandson's superb paintings this image depicts fisherman rowing out from the seashore on a stormy day. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt the versatile artist Philippe Jacques Loutherbourg was born in Fulda Germany and was a pupil of J. H. Tischbein and Carle Vanloo and Francis Casanova the elder in Paris. His romantic landscapes battle scenes portraits and biblical subjects were highly esteemed and lauded by influential colleagues such as Diderot. He frequently exhibited at the Salon and became a venerated member of the Académie Royale in 1767. In 1771 he moved to England where he was employed as the principal scenery designer at London's Drury Lane Theatre. His creative and minutely detailed sets revolutionized the genre of scene painting and he soon began dabbling in costume design. Loutherbourg once again astounded contemporaries in 1782 with his pioneering invention of the "Eidophusikon" a novel variety of moving panorama that was accompanied by music. His substantial and varied oeuvre also included book illustrations and a series of aquatints of British scenery that was published in 1801 and 1805. Aside from a brief trip to Switzerland in 1782 he remained in London for the duration of his life and became heavily engrossed in mysticism.

Abbey Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland in Aquatint and Lithography 1770-1860 no.6 plate 6. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches. A wonderful early separately published impression of Loutherbourg's celebrated image of fishermen on Brighton Beach.

This delicate aquatint is an early separately published state of a print which was later included in Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." The print which was re-engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler was enlarged and re-titled "Brighthelmstone Fishermen Returning." This early example of Loutherbourg's work wonderfully shows his skill as an artist. The composition and arrangement of the image provides a fluidity to the picture that is truly compelling and demonstrates Loutherbourg's abilities as a draftsman. Overall very good. Matted. An attractive mezzotint portrait of Benjamin Franklin with delicate contemporary coloring. The engraving was done after an original portrait by the famed French painter Charles Philippe Vanloo sometimes spelled Van Loo. The original portrait was done while Franklin resided in Paris in the years during and after the American Revolution and is now in the collection of the American Philosophical Society which was founded by Franklin. Sellers asserts that it is "beyond question a life portrait" done between 1777 and 1785. In Vanloo's original portrait Franklin wears a fur coat. In this print of the painting the fur coat has been replaced by a simpler cloth coat. Franklin wears glasses his hair is long and gray and he has a slight smile on his face. In the caption below the image his name is spelled "Francklin." "The substitution of a simple gray coat for the fur-trimmed costume of the original was undoubtedly in deference to revolutionary feeling" - Sellers. This print was engraved after Vanloo's portrait by the noted French engraver Pierre-Michel Alix who was known for his portraits of leading French citizens and prominent personalities. A handsome contemporary portrait of the American who dazzled France as a diplomat scientist philosopher and gentleman of society. SELLERS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IN PORTRAITURE p.394. This was one of several publications inspired by the controversy surrounding the claims of Montpensier's children to the Spanish throne. Some argued that the Treaty of Utrecht which ended the War of the Spanish Succession annulled this claim. For them the treaty clearly stated that the crowns of France and Spain remain separate. The anonymous author of the present book does not agree. He supports his claim with an ingenious argument. The final section entitled "Postscript to the Montpensier Marriage" was also published separately. Not in the British Museum Catalogue. unknown books
