Depicts in the centre of the image the four ancient statues which portrayed demigods Castor and Pollux in the act of taming their horses and the obelisk erected by Pope Pius VI in 1786. From a French series titled 'Rome dans Sa Grandeur' circa 1870. Benoist was one of France's most gifted topographical artists of the 19th century he was both a master lithographer and painter. He began his career in Paris and by 1836 he was exhibiting his views at the Paris Salons and continued to do so until 1879. As an original lithographic artist Philippe Benoist specialized in exterior and interior views of many famous European buildings. CONDITION : Some light foxing and a little soiling in the margins. Crease at top left corner of the sheet. Some light foxing on the back of the sheet. unknown

The unachieved main intention of the voyage was: to extend French influence in Indochina but Manila Sydney and Rio de la Plata areas were also visited and documented with these superbly executed artworks published nine years before the official account of the voyage. Alfred Louis Philippe Hardy 1811-1893 Dermatologist he received 1836 his medical doctorate in Paris where in 1839 he became chef de clinique under Pierre Fouquier at the Hôpital de la Charité. In 1847 he obtained his agrégation at the faculty of medicine in Paris and four years later succeeded Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol as chef de service at the Hôpital Saint-Louis. For several years he held classes in dermatology at the hospital. In 1867 he succeeded Jules Béhier as chair of internal pathology at the university and in 1876 attained the chair of clinical medicine at Hôpital Necker. unknown
