Provenance: Martine-Marie-Pol de Béhague comtesse de Béarn 1870-1939 by inheritance to her nephew Hubert de Ganay and thence to his heirs; bookplate with initials H H. First Edition of this translation of St. Augustine's De spiritu et littera by the Academician Philippe Dubois or Dubois-Goibaud who also translated the Confessions. The Approbation dated 8 August 1697 is followed by a royal privilege dated January 1698 to an anonymous libraire who soon after transferred the privilege to the Royal Printer Jean-Baptiste Coignard II. Coignard finished the printing on 23 December 1699. The book's sober undecorated covers the mark of the so-called janséniste style open to reveal exuberantly colored German floral endpapers. Called "papier doré gauffré" in French brocade paper was a specialty of Augsburg and Nürnberg and was probably first produced by engravers or goldsmiths. The pattern was printed either in negative relief with the motifs in intaglio so that the "gold" leaf actually a mixture of brass and an alloy of copper tin zinc and sometimes lead appears as the ground as here; or in positive relief usually showing the patterns in gold on a colored ground. The colors were applied successively using stencils usually cut in oiled paper or in thin metal sheets. Cf. C. Kopylov Papiers dorés d'Allemagne au siècle des Lumières 2012 pp. 17-19. 1784102511784. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some very light foxing in the right margin. Image size: 15 x 11 7/8 inches. A fantastic proof before letters of this decorative Rococo print of a happy couple the morning after their wedding.<br/> <br/>Genre painting came back into favor when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative subjects swept the country influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze for intimate boudoir scenes did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This print is a wonderful example of French Rococo tastes. The picture is set in a sumptuous bedroom the morning after a young aristocratic couple's wedding. The young bride sits on her father's lap while he speaks with his new son-in-law. Two chambermaids ready her toiletries while another closes the curtains on the marriage bed. This beautiful print is the pendant picture to Pierre Antoine Baudouin's "Le Coucher de la Mariee" which depicts the young newlyweds retiring to bed on their wedding night. Baudouin's painting was engraved by Moreau le jeune and finished by F. P. Simonet. Dugoure's frivolous scene is beautifully engraved by Triere creating a truly captivating image which epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art.<br/> <br/>Nevill French Prints of the Eighteenth Century p. 135. unknown books

Quite possibly the only comic book in its class Le Grand Rêve Americain The Great American Dream adapts technology developed by Philippe Schléret and Véronique Hauss using molded plastic to create brilliantly colored 3D images. The work exuberantly lampoons Pop Art American culture and early underground comic books and of all who have ever encountered the work and written of it seemingly none have failed to mention the heavy use of oversized female breasts that jut out from nearly every panel. Indeed OCLC record no. 712159856 lists "Large-breasted women" as one of the subjects. Other tropes not to be ignored include fancy sports cars gangsters and fastfood joints.
