"Thomas Hosmer Shepherd 1792 - 1864 war ein britischer Aquarellmaler bekannt vor allem für seine detailgetreue Darstellung von Gebäuden oftmals mit lebendigen Straßenszenen die Menschen Pferde und Kutschen zeigten. Er arbeitete in London und später in Edinburgh Bath und Bristol. Seine Zeichnungen waren Vorlage für zahlreiche Stahlstiche die auch Bücher illustrierten. Shepherd arbeitete hauptsächlich für Frederick Crace 1799 - 1859 einem Innenarchitekten und Kommissar für Kanalisation. Ursprünglich sollte er die Gebäude festhalten die kurz vor dem Abriss standen. Er zeichnete dann aber auch die Neubauten. Shepherds Bilder liefern heute den Forschern Hinweise auf das Bauwesen die Architektur und Geschichte im 19. Jahrhundert. Heute sind viele dieser Zeichnungen Bestandteil der Crace collection im British Museum aber auch durch ein Einzelwerk das den Lesesaal zeigt. Die private Sammlung von Friedrich Crace 1799 - 1859 kam zum Britischen Museum durch seinen Sohn John Gregory Crace im Jahr 1878. Die Kollektion besteht aus rund 1200 handschriftlichen und gedruckten Karten und Ansichten aus London von 1560 bis 1860." Wikipedia. Shepherd "was one of the most esteemed watercolourists of his day. Contains several articles on the Treaty of Washington also known as the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty signed August 9 1842 settled the dispute over the location of the Maine-New Brunswick border between the United States and Great Britain and the shared use of the Great Lakes. It also reaffirmed the location of the border at the 49th parallel in the westward frontier up to the Rocky Mountains originally defined in the Treaty of 1818. It also called for a final end to the slave trade on the high seas to be enforced by both signatories. The Treaty was signed by United States Secretary of State Daniel Webster and United Kingdom Privy Counsellor Alexander Baring Lord Ashburton. A plaque commemorating the treaty was placed at the site of the old State Department building in Washington D.C. where the signing occurred. The Treaty is responsible for two geographic oddities. First since Fort Montgomery a U.S. fort in northeastern New York had been constructed on Canadian soil the border between Maine and the St. Lawrence was adjusted to 3/4 of a mile north of the 45th parallel this placing the abandoned fort on U.S. soil. Second the incorrect assumption in the Treaty of Paris that the source of the Mississippi River lay north of the Lake of the Woods would result in the enclave of the Northwest Angle being part of the U.S.This treaty marked the end of unofficial fighting known informally as the Aroostook or Lumberjack's War along the Maine-New Brunswick border and resolved issues that had led to the Indian Stream conflict as well as the Caroline Affair. The border was fixed with the disputed territory divided between the two nations. Also as a result of this treaty portions of the western U.S.-Canada border were adjusted so as to be consistent. It gave the U.S. negligibly more land to the north; iron ore was later discovered on this land. The Creole case was passed over by both nations. The treaty was an unforeseen bonus for the United States. The British in adjusting the US-Canadian boundary farther west lost a vital area to the US that contained the priceless Mesabi iron ore of Minnesota. The covers appear to be card and not wood. Oblong 13.25 cm 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches lacks all free end papers. VIII. 1-72 81-104. Defective: lacking the 4 center leaves. 6 leaves of manuscript music in round notes sewn in at back with the tunes Cambridge Ascension China North Salem Watchman Exhortation Littleton and Savannah. "Published according to Act of Congress." The first edition was "Engraved for the Editor by Abner Reed Lansingburg 1795" with viii. 104 pp. A second printing was issued in 1802 using the same plates. Reed was also the engraver of this tunebook identified at the bottom of the Index page.The Second Edition 1804 had a new title "The New York & Vermont Collection of Sacred Harmony." It also had new pagination: viii. 9-15 1 112. It has this prefatory note: "Hitherto known by the title of the 'New-york Collection' since it has been printed by the Author's own hands have induced him to present to the public this second Edition enlarged and corrected."The printing offered to you here has the same page numbers as the 1795 & 1802 printings uses the same plates with the change in the imprint to "Printed by the Author." Since the 1802 printing had the Lansingburg imprint and the Second edition of 1804 has a changed title & pagination and with the note by Atwill that he had been printing copies "with his own hands" we deem this an 1803 printing unrecorded. This printing is not in Britton & Lowens American Sacred Music Imprints 1698-1810 where the first & second editions are recorded in detail.The Index claims that the following tunes included here were "never before published." He was also required to furnish the paper!
