Supposedly translated from an Arabic text. l Abdeker ou l'art de conserver la beauté 1754 raconte l'histoire d'un amour interdit entre Abdeker un jeune médecin attaché au soin des femmes du sérail du sultan à Constantinople et la splendide Fatmé joyau par son inégalable beauté autant que par sa douceur d'âme de ce même sérail. Pour déjouer la méfiance des eunuques et multiplier les occasions de rendre visite à sa bien-aimée Abdeker entreprend de lui transmettre tous les moyens pour une femme de conserver la beauté. Causes physiques causes morales rien n'est omis ; il pénètre jusque dans le sanctuaire des plaisirs tout en se gardant prétend-il d'effaroucher les Grâces qui en gardent l'entrée. La forme singulière de cet ouvrage piquera sans doute la curiosité des lecteurs. Abdeker est un médecin mais un médecin amoureux qui initie sa maîtresse la plus belle femme de l'univers dans tous les mystères de la beauté ; et après avoir lu son livre on est instruit de tous les secrets de son art en croyant n'avoir lu que l'histoire de ses amours.L'auteur a recours à une fiction amoureuse l'amour d'un médecin pour une femme du harem pour transmettre aux lecteurs un savoir hygiénique et cosmétique. Abdeker prodigue donc ses conseils remèdes et recettes à la belle Fatmé formant ainsi un recueil de pommades huiles poudres savons pastilles onguent infusion décoction talc . toutes dédiées à la beauté du corps. La première édition de ce texte à paru en 1754 rééditée en 1756 avec une augmentation de deux parties. Ces deux suppléments furent jugés sans intérêt littéraire et médical et ne furent pas repris dans cette 3ème édition de 1774. Antoine Le Camus en dehors de ses qualités de poète était bien médecin il exerça à Paris jusqu'au début de l'anné 1772 où il mourut à l'âge de 50 ans. According to a Wikipedia entry about him the author Armand-Gaston Camus was born in April of 1740 and died in November of 1804. French Revolutionist captive for 33 months of the Austrians son of the lawyer Pierre Camus successful lawyer in his own right and founder of the Archives Nationales. Three essays printed on rag paper disbound from a collected volume of the series Memoires de Litterature and each housed in its own hole-punched plastic sleeve for safe-keeping. The First Memoir is from pp. 433-527 with pp. 516-27 being "Addition au Memoire Sur un Livre Allemand le Tewerdanck imprime pages 170-211 de ce volume. Eight fancy ornate black-and-white engravings quite fetching. Still sturdily bound easy to read the French language text and with very mild soiling and light to moderate foxing here and there not intruding on the text's readability. It appears to be inordinately interested to convey information about new methods of reproduction including polytypage stereotypie monotypie homotypie all in service of printing and type-setting. The Second Memoir is from pp. 277-349 pp. "Rapport fait a l'Institut sur Les Travaux des Citoyens Herhan Olliveir Dupeyrat ou Second Memoire." The "Additions et Corrections" is paginated from pp. 556-562. These three items are not dated but they come from Tome Cinquieme and thus are placed around 1801. A couple of pages are loose but present. Would be a superb choice for rebinding. Very light edge-wear a bit of chipping else quite nice.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes and for sets. Archives Nationale paperback
