Les Discours de Suède sont un ensemble de deux allocutions prononcées par l'écrivain à la suite de l'obtention du prix Nobel de littérature : celui du 10 décembre 1957 prononcé à Stockholm pour la remise du prix et celui du 14 décembre 1957 prononcé à l'université d'Upsala intitulée L'artiste et son temps - un texte rédigé en 1953 en guise de préface au texte de Wilde La Ballade de de la gêole de Reading. Une postface clôt l'ouvrage où il est question des deux totalitarismes de l'art pour l'art du réalisme socialiste et du fameux « engagement » de l'intellectuel - en des termes qui n'ont rien perdu de leur acuité. Qu'on en juge : « C'est ainsi que beaucoup de nos artistes aspirent à être maudits ont mauvaise conscience à ne pas l'être et souhaitent en même temps l'applaudissement et le sifflet » ; ou encore : « L'académisme de droite ignore une misère que l'académisme de gauche utilise ». Le texte est imprimé sur les presses de l'Imprimerie Moderne à Montrouge le 6 février 1958. Il est dédié à Louis Germain à qui Camus avait écrit dès novembre : « Ma première pensée après ma mère a été pour vous. Sans vous sans cette main affectueuse que vous avez tendue au petit enfant pauvre que j'étais sans votre enseignement et votre exemple rien de tout cela ne serait arrivé. Je ne me fais pas un monde de cette sorte d'honneur. Lithograph after own design by Pierre Duval le Camus printed by Lion and published by Lemercier in Paris and McLean in London c. 1830. Pierre Duval le Camus Lisieux 1790 - 1854 Saint-Cloud was a French painter and lithographer who specialised in portraits and genre scenes. His father was a master glazier and sent him to Paris to learn the trade. However Pierre found himself attracted to the arts instead was taught by Claude Gautherot. From 1808 he would study with Jacques-Louis David. In very good condition. Sheet cropped to the image border. A small crease in the top left margin corner. A few small spots in the lower left margin and a dampstain in the lower right margin corner this lightly affecting the corner of the image. unknown

One of a handful of copies specially bound and produced for collaborators of the film and book. Quarto. Publisher's presentation binding of full vellum with titles in gilt to the spine. Housed in the original card slipcase. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated throughout with high quality tipped in colour photographs. A very good copy indeed the binding square and firm with minor soiling and a few marks to the vellum at the extremities. The contents are entirely complete and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. One small photo has a nick and creasing to the edge otherwise the contents are in fine bright condition throughout. The gloss pictorial covers of the regular trade edition are bound in at the front and rear. The slipcase is firm and intact with some wear to and marks to the extremities. Rare in this limited presentation issue. This copy was produced for presentation to the American screenwriter film producer director and narrator Winston Hibler who co-wrote and narrated the 1953 Academy Award winning Documentary film of the same name. With the publisher's printed dedication opposite the title page "Exemplaire imprimé spécialement / pour / Monsieur Winston Hibler".
