Presumed first edition with no date or subsequent printings indicated. American issue with Stokes' imprint at the base of the spine. In good condition in the publisher's decorative greyish-blue cloth. Sharp and sound but with a thin dampstain throughout along the top edge. Contents otherwise clean with an ownership inscription to the title page dated 1897 and a handsome bookplate to the front paste-down. Surprisingly scarce little compendium of Carlyle's "pen portraits" which were found among his correspondence.
