Alexander Carlyle 1722-1805 was Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a witness to the 1745 battle of Prestonpans. Although first published in 1860 it was written nearly a century earlier covering events to the year 1770. It proved popular reprinting within the year and reaching a third edition in 1861.
