Ambassador John Lothrop Motley 1814 -1877. Mounted on 9 ledger sheets 31 x 42cm. .Ambassador John Lothrop Motley April 15 1814 â€“ May 29 1877 was an American author and diplomat. As a popular historian he is best known for his works on the Netherlands the three volume work The Rise of the Dutch Republic and four volume History of the United Netherlands. As United States Minister to Austria in the service of the Abraham Lincoln administration Motley helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War. He later served as Minister to the United Kingdom Court of St. James during the Ulysses S. Grant administration.In December 1870 Mr. Motley sent a 62-page dispatch to Secretary Fish titled â€œEnd of a Missionâ€ in which he protested his recall and recounted the events leading to the dispatch of November 10. The Secretary followed with an even longer rejoinder sent not to Motley who was no longer in an official position and hadnâ€™t been when he had sent the dispatch but to the chargÃ© dâ€™affaires Benjamin Moran. Senator Sumner upbraided Mr. Grant and Mr. Fish on the Senate floor then had the Senate publish all the documents related to the recall. In 1878 Oliver Wendell Holmes a fellow Brahmin wrote a memorial biography which was devoted to a defense of the former minister and a repudiation of his recall. John Jay who had succeeded Mr. Motley in Vienna published his own defense of him in 1877. Mr. Grant after leaving the presidency wrote a letter to the New York Herald reiterating that his reason for dismissing Mr. Motley was solely that he had failed to carry out his duties. Mr. Grant restated this charge a few years later in a Cairo interview while he was on a world tour concluding that he had no ill will toward Mr. Motley who â€œâ€¦like other estimable men made mistakes and Motley made a mistake which made him an improper person to hold office under me.â€.Provenance: Lt.-Col. Herbert Alexander St. John-Mildmay was born on 20 July 1836.1 He was the son of Captain George William St. John-Mildmay and Mary Baillie. He married Susan Margaret Stackpole Motley daughter of the American writere and diplomat the Hon. John Lothrop Motley 1814 -1877 on 7 May 1884.1 He died on 21 October 1922 at age 86. Duodecimo in half-sheets 17 x 11cm pp.2 40 unpaginated. Black ink ownership of Jane Ballie Welsh Haddington to flyleaf. Further black ink inscription from Thomas Carlyle also to flyleaf: 'To William Fingland Thornhill: T.C. Templand 29 March 1842.' Also with an autograph letter dated 28th February 1924 on headed note-paper from Alexander Carlyle 1843-1931 nephew of Thomas loosely inserted. Contemporary brown morocco recently rehinged and repaired to spine with gilt titles to red label. Housed in a fleece-line orange buckram-covered slipcase. Bookplate of James Fingland son of the recipient William Fingland to front pastedown. Clean and complete with a touch of light occasional spotting. Wear to boards and spine now carefully restored to an attractive robust condition. Very good. Alexander Carlyle who acted as his uncle's chief advocate on the public stage after his death in 1881 building a formidable archive of correspondence later gifted to the National Library of Scotland here deftly unravels the provenance of this French dictionary: Gifted by Thomas just after the death of his mother-in-law Grace at her home in Templand near Dumfries in March 1842 to "a poor boy of Dr. Russell's whom she Mrs. Welsh liked who staid here three nights when one of her miserable servants failed a Tardy's Dictionary and an old Livy; I remembered the Tardy and thought a charitable orphan heart best deserved it.
