A complete collected set comprising Carlyle"s Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished in seven volumes here bound as three and History of Friedrich II of Prussia Called Frederick the Great in ten volumes here bound as five. Together these works represent Carlyle"s major contributions to historical and philosophical writing ranging from literary criticism and biographical studies to his monumental account of Frederick the Great. Compromising: 1872. Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished. Complete in seven volumes. First issued in collected form in 1839 with final revisions in 1869. 1873. History of Friedrich II of Prussia Called Frederick the Great. Complete in ten volumes. Prize plate to front paste down of volume IX and X of "History of Friedrich II" and volume I II and III of "Miscellaneous." Hinges cracked slightly with binding materials occasionally partially exposed but holding firm. Hinge at front free endpapers of volume III and IV of "History" reinforced with tape. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in minor loss to calf. Slight discolouration to spines. Internally firmly bound. The scarce Four Volumes in Two shilling edition of Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished written by prominent Scottish intellectual Thomas Carlyle. Blieved to have been published in c.1880 with the essays first published from 1838-1839. In half calf with black cloth. A prize copy presented by the Lord Admiralty with a stamp to the verso of the title leaf. Thomas Carlyle was hailed during his time as among the greatest British intellectuals and these essays are considered among his greatest works delving into literary criticism philosophy and history. He also asserted great influence on Victorian art and literature founding the London Library and helping to establish the National Portrait Galleries in London and Edinburgh. Vol. I - Contains essays on Burns Goethe German playwirghts and Werner among others. Vol. II - Contains essays on Voltaire Schiller On History and Luther's Psalm among others. Vol. III - Contains essays on Boswell's Life of Johnson Corn-Law Rhymes Diderot and Coutn Cagliostro among others. Vol. IV - Contains essays on The Diamond Necklace Sir Walter Scott the French Revolution and The Opera among others. In half calf with black cloth boards. Externally mostly smart with clean black boards. The odd small rubbing mark to calf and slight fading to spines. Minor bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. Brown end papers are clean. Prize bookplates to front free end papers of both volumes. Internally firmly bound. Lord Admiralty stamps to verso of Vol. I and Vol. III contents leaves.
