1866SET44-C-1London : Chapman and Hall 1866-1869. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A uniformly bound collection of the works of Thomas Carlyle. Carlyle 4 December 1795 5 February 1881 was a Scottish philosopher satirical writer essayist historian and teacher during the Victorian era. His combination of a religious temperament with loss of faith in traditional Christianity made Carlyle's work appealing to many Victorians who were grappling with scientific and political changes that threatened the traditional social order. He brought a trenchant style to his social and political criticism and a complex literary style to his works. His works themselves were incredibly diverse a fact testified to in this set which features fiction histories lectures essays biographies translations and satires. This collection ordered here in a rough chronology contains: - Sartor Resartus and Lectures on Heroes. - The French Revolution in two volumes. - Chartism and Past and Present. - Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches: With Elucidations in two volumes. - Latter-Day Pamphlets. - Two Biographies: Friedrich Schiller; John Sterling. - History of Friedrich II of Prussia called Frederick the Great in seven volumes. - Translations from the German in two volumes. - Miscellaneous Essays in four volumes. Notable inclusions amongst these titles are Sartor Resartus - Carlyle's first major work and an ambitious attempt to create a new kind of book - The French Revolution - a similarly momentous work that 'was filled with a passion hitherto unknown in historical writing'- and Frederick the Great Carlyle's last major work. The fourth volume of the latter contains several attractive folding map plates. Bound by W. Bone & Son. With 21 volumes in total. In full cloth bindings Externally sound with light shelfwear to extremities and small marks to some boards. Spines are sunned. One hinge failed four hinges strained.
