This set is missing volumes IV IX XIV and XVII - 4 9 14 and 17. Three volumes are a bit shaken with one signature pulled but the sewn binding is sound wear and chipping to spine ends page fore-edge toning. There is some occasional pencil marking but most pages are unmarked. No dust jackets issued. The last volume is dated 1874-no date in the others. Size of the volumes is about 4 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches brown covers with a paper spine title field-the label is browned but still legible. ; Fold-out maps. . Chapman & Hall, Ltd. hardcover

He moved to Paris in 1854 and trained alongside Henry Baconat the École des Beaux-Artsin Paris devoting himself to genre painting. He moved to London in 1872 and from there regularly visited Ireland. Best known for his Irish genre studies and paintings of Irish households Helmick was the foremost artist among a small set of painters who focused on rural Irish culture and was hailed by contempo rary critics as an American Wilkie. Throughout his time in London he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy the Royal Institute of Oil Painters the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers the Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. He also exhibited work at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts the Royal Hibernian Academy the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. He was elected a member of Society of British Artists in 1879 and the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers in 1881. 25126Circa 1865. Elliott & Fry 55 Baker Street Portman Square London W. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. His lengthy history of Frederick the Great is the one book Hitler had in the bunker with him. The copy of the present item in the National Portrait Gallery has the number NPG Ax28576 and the dating to around 1865 is theirs. The signature to that copy differs from that on the present item which may be a facsimile since the photograph has been stuck down over the top part. 6.3 x 9.2 cm photographic print laid down on 6.3 x 10.5 cm piece of card. The photographers' details and the signature 'T. Carlyle' with '63' written to the left are present on the card on the thin strip beneath the photograph with the details repeated with the royal crest on the reverse. The image is a head-and shoulders shot of a weary-looking Carlyle staring at the camera with his right hand pressed against the side of his face. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. See image. Endpapers are also brittle with many having short closed tears. Some water staining to exteriors and endpapers. Leather is chipping and rubbed but spines are quite legible. Texts are unmarked.
