From the short lived firm of Frederick Leypoldt. Frederick Leypoldt 1835-1884 publisher and co-founder of the American Library Association began publishing in 1863 because of the dearth of imported books during the Civil War his first work being a translation of 'The Ice Maiden' by Hans Christian Andersen. Bruckmann a noted German art publisher based in Munich opened a London studio at the Strand in 1868.<br /> The artist P. Kramer is almost certainly Peter Kramer 1823-1907 a painter and lithographer from Bavaria who emigrated to the United States in 1848. He returned to Germany in 1858 but was later exiled for caricaturing the King of Bavaria. He returned to the United States and opened a studio in New York City. Fred. Bruckmann unknown

The first issue has integral title and is dated 1863. Number 30 of "Only 100 Copies printed in this paper" as stated by a thin slip of paper printed in red pasted under the copyright notice on verso of title-page. Presentation copy inscribed in pencil by the publisher to John Jacob Astor's grandson the noted American scholar writer and philologist Charles Astor Bristed 1820-1874 for whom see <b>DAB</b>: "C. A. Bristed Esq. With the Compliments of the Publisher. Philad Jan. 15 1864." The editor was Hiram Corson 1828-1911 American scholar and professor who as an intimate of Walt Whitman defended him vigorously. Corson has contributed a long introduction and notes glossarial and critical in which he stated his belief that the true spirit of Chaucer's poetry "can be reached only through its original language and not through modernized versions." Scarce work. With a portrait frontispiece and vignette to the title page. The collected twenty-four short stories of the Canterbury Tales. Written in Middle English between 1387 and 1400 the tales are mostly told in verse presented as a story-telling contest between a group of pilgrims as they travel from London to Canterbury. Written by Geoffrey Chaucer an English poet author and civil servant considered the "father of English literature" for this work. With illustrative notes by Thomas Wright an English antiquarian and writer remembered as an editor of medieval texts. In the original orange cloth wraps. Externally sound with rubbing to the extremities and the odd small crease to the board tips. Light discolouration to the cloth with the odd mark. Internally firmly bound.
