First US Edition.Bound in a contemporary half crushed-morocco binding on marbled boards.This is an interesting work of fiction by ex-Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli written after his first term in office. These circumstances were seen as a novelty within Great Britain and the book quickly became a best-seller. This American edition proved to be extremely popular with 25000 copies being sold in the first three days alone. The publisher D. Appleton referred to this 'epidemic' as 'Lothair-mania'. 'Lothair' follows the life of a wealthy young orphan who is brought up by his Presbyterian uncle and a Catholic convert. The work compares the merits of the Catholic and Anglican churches as well as 'the Radical cause' through three different women that fight for Lothair's affection when he comes of age.Chapters include 'Life at Brentham' 'An Arrival' 'The 'Declaration of Geneva'' and 'Puppets'. Benjamin Disraeli 1804-1881 was a British statesmen and Conservative politician best known for serving twice as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Disraeli played a central role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party and its political platforms. With a bookplate to front paste down belonging to W. H. Perot. Six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of text. Collated complete. Bound in half-crushed morocco on marbled boards. Externally smart. Light wear to the extremities and the spine particularly along the bands of joints. Paste downs and endpapers are age-toned with some offsetting to the endpapers. Prior owner's bookplate to front paste down. Some chipping to the top right-hand corner of front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light age-toning to the pages.
