1900190792London: Longmans Green and Co. 1900. A smartly bound set of the Hughenden Edition named for Disraeli's home in Buckinghamshire. Disraeli's novels came to have a clear political intent aiming to shift Victorian public opinion and consequently the nation's politics. As he later wrote "it was not originally the intention of the writer to adopt the form of fiction as the instrument to scatter his suggestions but after reflection he resolved to avail himself to a method which in the temper of the times offered the best chance of influencing opinion" author's preface to the fifth edition of Coningsby 1849. The Hughenden edition was first published in 1881. 11 vols octavo 190 x 123mm. Portrait frontispiece to vols. I and XI title pages with engraved vignettes text printed within red borders. Contemporary half brown morocco for Bumpus spines lettered in gilt compartments decorated in gilt marbled sides and endpapers edges gilt bookmarkers laid in. Bindings bright and unrubbed scattered foxing. A near-fine set. unknown

Includes Venetia Coningsby Edymion Lothair The Young Duke and Count Alarcos Vivian Grey Tancred Sybil Henrietta Temple Contarini Fleming and the Rise of Iskander and Alroy. Light brown cloth with gilt and black titles and decorations to spines and dark blue and gilt cartouche to the front with gilt and blue border and further gilt boarder to the edges of the front board. Each page has a red border line around the text. Title pages each with a different engraving showing an aspect of Disraeli's county house Hughenden Manor the lake the terrace the study etc. Edward Buckton Lamb had done the remodelling of the house for Disraeli and his family. Very clean. Cloth is rather softened and a little worn to spine ends some corners are slightly bumped. Some rubbing to corners. Just a little faded to spines. Text is clean. Bindings are sound.
