These circumstances were seen as a novelty within Great Britain and the book quickly became a best-seller. This American edition proved to be extremely popular with 25000 copies being sold in the first three days alone. The publisher D. Appleton referred to this 'epidemic' as 'Lothair-mania'. 'Lothair' follows the life of a wealthy young orphan who is brought up by his Presbyterian uncle and a Catholic convert.
