"Surgical Removal of Meningiomas : Laurence Heister ushered in the era of surgical treatment of meningiomas with an operation in 1743 in Helmstad Germany. Heister operated on a 34-year-old Prussian soldier who presented with a fungating cranial lesion. Heister applied a caustic of lime; the patient died of postoperative infection. At the autopsy performed by Crellius the tumor was designated "de tumore capitis fungoso." The case was first reported later that year by Kaufman." Joung H. Lee Ed.: Meningiomas.
