The enormous library of 50,000 printed books, and some 7639 manuscripts formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st Earl of Oxford, Edward Harley (1689-1741), second Earl of Oxford, and their librarian Humfrey Wanley (1672-1726). The first Earl of Oxford "was one of the first collectors who systematically acquired early printed books; his son Edward... continued the library. After the latter's death in 1741, his widow sold the library for 13,000 pounds to the London bookseller Thomas Osborne (d. 1767), who employed Dr. Johnson and William Oldys, antiquary and later Norroy King-of-Arms, to catalogue it." (Breslauer & Folter). The catalogue was planned by Michael Maittaire who also wrote the Latin dedication to Lord Carteret. Dr. Johnson shared the cataloguing of the collection with Oldys, as well as adding the prefatory eight-page 'An Account of the Harleian Library' to volume one. Although this was a bookseller's catalogue, the prices were not published, but Osborne marked a minimum price it each, which were then sold to the highest bidder. The bulk of the manuscripts were sold to the nation for ?10,000. Provenance: Bookplate of the 'Afhaendet Fra Bibliotheket'; Classenske Bibliotek, Copenhagen; booklabel of Sotheby & Co. reference library.
Conservati segnalibri in seta verde.
Cfr. Evidently spearheaded by Chaper, who authored many of the first issues, the articles suggest a capable degree of scholarship and later issues are even elaborately-illustrated. Some of the earliest parts were issued in runs as small as 50 copies, according to the versos of the title-pages. - Camille-Eugène Chaper (1827-90) was a highly decorated military officer who, following his retirement from public life in 1875, devoted himself to his twin passions of regional bibliography and the management of mining operations. His collection of Dauphinoise imprints and authors (i.e., those of the former province of Dauphiné, capital Grenoble) was unrivalled, and he donated much material to the Bibliothèque de Grenoble. It is also recorded that he was particularly scrupulous about the provenance of his books and manuscripts, and if in any doubt about the propriety of an offering, he had the courage to steer clear of it. - The present example was evidently compiled with care by an admirer of Chaper - quite likely one of the authors mentioned above. OCLC shows a few US holdings of individual parts (eg. #9, on the printed playing-cards of the Grenoble region), but as far as we can tell, only the NYPL holds a complete run. Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt with raised bands, red labels with gilt lettering. Kress 4584; Goldsmiths 7819; not in Einaudi; not in INED. Jacques Savary (1622-1690) was for some time director of the French Royal Domains, and later became general business agent to the Duke of Mantua. He had such sound notions about commerce and was so successful in his operations that Colbert appointed him in 1670 in the "Conseil de la Reforme", which was to reform and refine the rules of commercial practice. The "Commercial Code" of 1673 resulting from it was called after him "Code Savary". He was then also pressed to write down and publish all his commercial knowledge, which pressure led to the publication of the famous Le parfait Négociant (1675). It taught everything a merchant should know, but only his left papers revealed to the world the immense and universal knowledge on commerce Savary possessed. The dictionary was immensely successful and covers all aspects of commerce and trade as well as legal and historical matters. Deals among others with: trading cities throughout the world, their manufactures, operation of foreign trade, trading companies (including a short history of the South Sea Company), banking (including an account of John Law's Bank), bookkeeping, etc. etc. The dictionary was the first of its kind to appear in Europe, and has furnished the principal part of the material for most of the dictionaries that were to follow. The project was sponsored by the French government who justly considered that such a dictionary, if well executed, would be of national importance. Hence a considerable, and indeed the most valuable portion of the work is compiled from memoirs sent to the author, by order of government, by the inspectors of manufactures in France and by the French consuls in foreign countries (see: McCulloch, p. 61). The dictionary is preceded, in volume one, with an elaborate, long (upto column 544) separate essay on the "État général du commerce de l'Europe" (and followed by the other continents Africa, Asia and the Americas). - Very small damage to head of spines of volumes 1 and 2.
