Eight decorative writing sheets of laid paper with elaborate engraved decorative borders with hand-colouring each contemporaneously mounted to card with pink and blue coloured paper edges and a blank sheet of laid paper affixed to the rear. The group including five different designs. Each measuring between 36.5 x 26cm and 33 x 24cm. Three apparently unused the other five with contemporary cut blank paper sections affixed to the central panels presumably to cover previous manuscript text/signs of use. There is rubbing to the coloured paper edging and some occasional light finger marking and dust soiling otherwise condition is very good indeed. A visually striking collection of writing sheets dating to the close of the eighteenth century most likely French decorated with vibrantly hand-coloured engraved Rococo borders incorporating fairies cherubs and sphinxes. Their particular use in this instance is somewhat unclear although being mounted to stiff card and with some having replaced sections to the blank panel it possible that they were being utilised as menu cards. unknown

Robert Dossie (1717-1777) was a rigourous advocate for the advantages of improved public knowledge. With the publication of this work he provided information and instruction to the reader in a multitude of trades, many never before disclosed outside there trades. As a resource, it was well regarded by eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century artisans and became the standard work for practical techniques of that era.

A sammelband of fourteen late sixteenth- early seventeenth-century Dutch-language pamphlets primarily concerning the administration of the city of Antwerp. The articles on customary law encompass the duties of city officials including burgomasters and justices of the peace; the conduct of criminal trials and implementation of torture; citizens’ rights including those of bastards and unmarried women; and contracts relating to property and trade. Two of the pamphlets are of particular note; firstly Artiickelen van het bestant ghesloten ende gheconcludeert voor XII a record of the proclamation of the Treaty of Antwerp issued in 1609 which initiated the Twelve Years' Peace an armistice between the Netherlands and Spain in the midst of the Eighty Years' War.; and secondly Articulen Ende Conditien vanden Tractate an official text of the condition of the 1585 surrender of Antwerp to Spanish condottiero Aleesandro Farnese following a lengthy siege. . Joints are moderately rubbed but sound; light shelfwear; a very few instances of early ink corrections or brief annotations in addition to Bowyer's name being added in ink to the title page in an early hand; additionally a 20th word in green ink on p. 1; one leaf M4 has been excised likely at the time of printing as the text is complete and the pagination is correct matching catalogued and digitized copies. <br /> <br /> In content this work comprises an abridged reprinting of Conyer Middleton's Dissertation 1734-5 correctly arguing that contrary to popular opinion William Caxton was the first printer in England. The second essay is an English translation of Gerard Meerman's Origines Typographicase in which the Dutch collector argues that the first printing was done by Laurentius in Harleim improved upon by Gutenberg and then Schoeffer in Mainz. Both essays are accompanied by intelligent commentary by the printers in addition to appendices on early Greek Hebrew and polyglot books. Bigmore and Wyman state "The book although it has been robbed of its authority by modern researchers at the time of its publication brought in great praise to its compilers the 'learned printers' of the age" p. 75. An important book delving into the history of printing in Europe that was reprinted several times in the 18th century. This copy of the first edition is from the library of American collector Albert A. Howard with his small monograph plate on the rear pastedown. Pleine basane mouchetée d'époque, filet à froid, dos à nerfs orné de caissons fleuris, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, tranches rouges mouchetées. Coiffe supérieure arasée, début de fente au mors inférieur avec petit manque à la coiffe.

Eine mittige Messingschließe. Vorsätze fehlen. Kl.-8vo. Schön blindgeprägter, ungewöhnlich gut erhaltener Schweinsleder-Wappenstempelband. Der Vorderdeckel zeigt zwischen Säulen "Des Heiligen Romisen Keisertums Wappen" (unten so in der Platte bezeichnet, mit Signatur "T. Kruger"); am Hinterdeckel das 12-teiige Wappen des "Augustus Churfurst" (an der Helmzierde bezeichnet "T.K."). Wohl noch früher Einband des Wittenberger Buchbinders Thomas Krüger (gest. 1591), Sohn des Buchbinders Nikolaus Krüger. "Seine ältesten datierten Stempel [...] tragen die Jahrzahl 1562" (Haebler I, 252). Krüger führte die in Wittenberg noch häufiger nachgemachte Mode ein, mehrere Platten auf jeweils einer Deckelseite anzubringen - ein Verfahren, das beim Kleinoktav-Format des vorliegenden Bandes außer Betracht blieb. - Gelenke unbedeutend berieben; altes Bibliotheksetikett und Signaturvermerke am Titel. Die originale ziselierte Schließe intakt. Insgesamt prächtig erhaltener Wittenberger Kurfürsteneinband mit sehr prägnanter Prägung, darin ein Klassiker des Humanismus in einem Lyonnaiser Druck. Very rare treatise: a report from the dean and medical faculty to the magistrate of Vienna, stating that they had inspected the city's pharmacies by order of the government, since "astrology" had predicted a plague epidemic for this year. Their evaluation is followed by a discussion of the nature of the plague, its causes (including eclipses and comets), and methods to prevent and to cure the disease (cf. Denis). - Possible authors are Crato von Krafftheim (1519-85) and Franz Emrich (1496-1560). Crato had developed an "Electuarium salutis Cratonis" against the plague, a popular mixture of theriac, mithridate, terra sigillata, bolus armenus, bezoar, and other remedies. That the use of "Thyriackh" is discouraged (fol. E2v) reinforces the case for Emrich's authorship: after the university reforms of 1537 he was the standard bearer of the modern hippocratic-galenic school of medicine, which disapproved of the previously favoured Arabic authorities. Indeed, the chapter on food and drink begins with a praise of Galen. In 1554 he published, under his own name, a treatise on plague prevention entitled "Ratschlag zu Verhüetung pestilentzischer Ansuechung". - Some browning and fingerstaining; trimmed rather closely in some places. 7488Undated: early nineteenth century. On one side each of two leaves of thin laid paper quality of tissue. Both leaves are good: lightly creased and spotted on aged paper. The first leaf roughly 19 x 18 cm carries six illustrations arranged 2 x 3 and with the captions reading: 'Price 2s/6d a way of purifying sea water'; 'Price 1s/6d preparation Acid Sulphuric'; 'Price of block 1s/- Physician Galenical School'; 'Price 1/- cold still'; 'Price 1/- Pelican'; '2s/6d distillation'. Printers blue pencil around third woodcut. The second leaf roughly 24 x 18.5 cm carries four illustrations arranged 2 x 2 the largest two being roughly 8 x 6 cm. The captions read: 'Bufonites' from the 'Hortus Sanitatis' of 1497 showing a man extracting a bezoar stone from the head of a frog; 'preparation medicinal earths'; 'obtaining draconites' and 'Hippocrates sleeve'. Along one margin: 'Please return specimens'. The 'Bufonites' engraving is certainly a skillful copy and it may be that the cuts were originally produced for a Roxburghe-Club-type publication before joining the printer's stock.
