189141828Webster City Iowa: The United States Printing Company Russell & Morgan Factories n.d. ca 1891. n.d. ca. 1891. PROMOTIONAL CARD. 3-1/2" x 2-1/2." The front of the card shows a very colorful picture of the King of Spades riding a bicycle and pointing to a trademark sign for Bicycle cards. He's wearing a backpack stating "Bicycle Cards" There are 2 holes in each wheel; one holds a paper wheel that turns and the other shows the numbers 1 - 10. On the reverse side of the card "Bicycle" Playing Cards are briefly described and promoted. Also stated is "Compliments of The Webster City Grocery Co. Webster City Iowa." The United States Playing Card Company was founded in 1867 as Russell Morgan & Co. a printing company. The company began printing four brands of playing cards in 1881: Tigers Sportsman's Army and Navy and Congress. They began printing Bicycle cards which would become their most popular line in 1885. Business boomed and in 1891 Russell Morgan & Co. changed its name to the United States Printing Company. The playing card business was successful enough that it was spun off as a separate business in 1894 as The United States Playing Card Company. Light soiling and rubbing to rear and with light crease running along the bottom edge. Appears to have been professionally repaired. A very nice piece of early promotional material . First edition of this wonderfully preserved salesman’s catalogue of Victorian die-cut chromolithograph visiting cards from the Crown Card Co. in Columbus OH. The Crown Card Co. does not appear in street directory listings or commercial listings in and around Columbus Ohio through from 1880 through 1910 so it may have been operating purely as mail order subsidiary from the Crown Card Co. located in Cadiz OH through salesmen and sales agents with notice on the front cover here indicating that this catalogue was “given as a premium for a $ 1.00 card order.†At the height of the Victorian era many would carry these specially printed novelty cards to introduce themselves for social calls and even for wooing a prospective spouse. Traveling salesmen would often contract with one or more card maker and many could make a very good living selling the beautifully printed pieces. The Clinton Brothers maintained a successful printing house and stationery store which specialized in visiting and address cards often with promotions for note paper pen knives or cuff buttons & shirt studs. The business appears to have possibly drawn upon colour lithography printers in Rochester NY and surrounding areas for their chromolithograph catalogues and novelties which also included greeting cards postcards and advertisements. Caldwell & Co. jewelers in Philadelphia PA w/ 2 embossed monogram printing samples 7 original silver gelatin photographs showing monogram samples from the company and price list for monogramming ivory. First edition of this remarkable example of Edwardian Polish printing while Poland was still under the control of the Russian Empire including statement stamped in Russian that the publication was permitted by the Military Censors of Warsaw. The printer notes in the preface that this was the first such catalogue of its kind detailing in embossed relief 800 Russian and French monograms in Slavic and Gothic fonts and other emblems. 1900185953Leeds: Harrison & Waide c.1900. Cough syrup hair dye tooth tincture and poison. An extensive collection of designs ranging from the 1870s through to the Edwardian era demonstrating the development of styles. The labels primarily refer to chemists' and druggists' products but also include advertisements and packaging for food and drink such as whiskey lemonade and curry powder. Operating as printers bookbinders and stationers Alfred Harrison and Thomas Waide commenced trading in 1878. They were based in Leeds an important printing hub of the period that was "second only to London. Leeds firms specialized in quality colour printing of everything from postcards to calendars and posters on tinplate as well as card and paper" Fraser p. 164. That "quality" is very much in evidence here exhibited by the huge range of styles for a vast array of products: rheumatic pellets and kidney pills hair restorer and wart paste castor oil and poisons with much else besides including wine and beer labels photographic developer and furniture polish. Harrison and Waide's firm was well-respected and they moved to successively larger premises until around 1909 when their partnership ended. The expansive nature of the business is indicated by the huge number of chemists who are named on the labels from all parts of Britain Ireland and even as far afield as India. Quarto 254 x 180 mm. Approximately 2000 printed labels mounted on 502 pp. of pink paper thumb index lettered in manuscript at front. With 8 "ordinary slip labels" loosely inserted. Recent dark brown quarter morocco black label dark green cloth sides. With 20th-century bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst Lancashire pharmacist and businessman. 7488Undated: early nineteenth century. On one side each of two leaves of thin laid paper quality of tissue. Both leaves are good: lightly creased and spotted on aged paper. The first leaf roughly 19 x 18 cm carries six illustrations arranged 2 x 3 and with the captions reading: 'Price 2s/6d a way of purifying sea water'; 'Price 1s/6d preparation Acid Sulphuric'; 'Price of block 1s/- Physician Galenical School'; 'Price 1/- cold still'; 'Price 1/- Pelican'; '2s/6d distillation'. Printers blue pencil around third woodcut. The second leaf roughly 24 x 18.5 cm carries four illustrations arranged 2 x 2 the largest two being roughly 8 x 6 cm. The captions read: 'Bufonites' from the 'Hortus Sanitatis' of 1497 showing a man extracting a bezoar stone from the head of a frog; 'preparation medicinal earths'; 'obtaining draconites' and 'Hippocrates sleeve'. Along one margin: 'Please return specimens'. The 'Bufonites' engraving is certainly a skillful copy and it may be that the cuts were originally produced for a Roxburghe-Club-type publication before joining the printer's stock.
