1946ABE-2356638188Constable London 1946 The very rare War Economy jacket is safe inside its mylar sleeve now but it was already a fragile thing the day it was issued. But at least it has protected the smooth blue binding and the silver gilt spine titling. Although the binding is not faded it is a bit spotted. A small owner signature is on the FEP and it has the date '1946'. Fortunately it is neat. Text block is tanned because of the paper of course. But this is a good collectable copy of an uncommon book. 1984ABE-1286379811Atlantic Monthly Press 1984 A great and enlightening look at the work of a great graphic artist. This brilliant survey of a prolific workaholic was largely made by the artist himself. This is a superior copy of the hardback first printing in a superb jacket that is not worn price clipped or damaged in any way. Book is tight and may be unread. A discrete former owner's blind stamp to the front end paper is barely discernible because Searle has decorated the space with his customary blots and squiggles. 1896ABE-5386825687Smith Elder & Co. London 1896 A rare Conan Doyle first edition beautifully rebound in navy quarter leather with gold titling on the spine five raised bands and hand marbled front and back boards. An important Sir Arthur Conan Doyle book and for many collectors it is a centre piece of their collection. Rodney Stone is a Gothic mystery and boxing novel first published in 1896. The rebinding adds a great elegance of course but it also adds durability and quality. This is an heirloom quality binding that will sit handsomely on any Conan Doyle collector's shelf. Illustrations are by Sidney Paget and this is the true first from 1896 which means the half tone blocks are fresh and clear. This is the true English and world 1st Edition. The eponymous narrator is a Sussex country boy who is taken to London by his uncle Sir Charles Tregellis a highly respected gentleman and arbiter of fashion who is on familiar terms with the most important people of Great Britain. The novel interweaves Rodney's coming-of-age story with that of his friend Boy Jim's boxing endeavors and a large portion of it deals with the famous bare-knuckle boxers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century such as Jem Belcher John Jackson Daniel Mendoza Dutch Sam and others. The book includes vignettes of a number of historical personages notably the Prince Regent Lord Nelson Sir John Lade Lord Cochrane and Beau Brummell. 1998ABE-5858626889Bloomsbury London 1998 Harry and Meghan have bought the Santa Barbara home that was the subject of this superb novel Riven Rock. The intriguing tale of a trailblazing women s rights activist who married the youngest son and heir to a vast family fortune may be of great interest to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Not only does the relationship between Katharine and Stanley McCormick draw the odd parallel with their own but the royal couple s new Santa Barbara home is built on what was once McCormick family land. The fabled 87-acre estate in Montecito California boasts a fascinating history - the place where Mr McCormick was confined for 40 years due to mental illness while a string of eminent psychiatrists were employed in a desperate but ultimately fruitless bid to cure him. The 19th century family saga is documented in this 1998 novel Riven Rock by the award winning American author TC Boyle. The villa also featured in an episode of The Sopranos. 1871295Washington: Government Printing Office 1871. 4to. 290 x 230 mm. 11 1/2 x 9 inches. 4 205 pp. Illustrated with 7 chromolithographic plates 6 micro photographs and one lithograph. Bound in contemporary pebbled morocco spine and tips over marbled paper boards; edges rubbed but a sound and attractive copy. First illustrated edition; the text was published in an abbreviated form in 1869. This report was initiated by an outbreak of disease in a large number of Texas cattle that had been shipped north and landed in Cairo Illinois. The disease quickly spread and a government response was requested through the House of Representatives. A team lead by the English Professor of Veterinary Medicine James Gamgee and the botanists H. W. Ravenel of South Carolina traveled to Texas to find the origins of the diseased live stock. In an attempt to better illustrate their findings of the impact of the disease on the lungs spleens hearts and kidneys they employed the latest technology of chromolithographic printing and micro photography to produce highly legible detailed images of damaged organs. The color printed plates and photographs were produced in Baltimore by the Hoen & Co Chromolithographers and they demonstrate the use of color printing for medical research. 295.
