1859141030London: The London Printing and Publishing Company Limited. c.1859-61. Doorstepping the Indian Rebellion A fascinating and notable piece of 19th-century publishing history: a pair of publisher's blads in this case used by a salesman in the garnering of subscriptions for two very popular and topical part-works Robert Montgomery Martin's The Indian Empire 1858-59 and Charles Ball's The Indian Mutiny 1858-61; each gilt stamped on the front cover "Specimen. Not for Sale" and carrying at the end a number of pages for recording subscribers' details. The blad for The Indian Mutiny shows that our salesman was on the East Midlands circuit with the names of two individuals recorded in Radford and Nottingham: a Thomas Brown and a Joseph Houlton baker of Derby Road Nottingham the latter recorded in directories of the period. A blad is a sample book section used by publishers and their representatives for promotional purposes. These are particularly handsome examples presented in their now slightly faded but nonetheless impressive cloth bindings that alone would have been a temptation to the potential book buyer offering a choice selection of plates and the opening six or eight pages of text. Needless to say their highly ephemeral nature makes them decidedly uncommon. Two works large octavo. Each with steel-engraved frontispiece and vignette title page first work with 11 plates second with 8 both with hand-coloured engraved map of India and specimen of letterpress. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration. Most of the work is pictorial with one large image on most pages with caption/text at the bottom of the page. This booklet reproduces original photographs from the Apollo 8 mission. This publication was both a tribute to the important step of man's march to the stars and it was also a commercial. It was the technological advances that permitted the space journeys that were pictured in this booklet. In their own way printed communications have utilized their advances to help people tell their story better. The reproduction of these photographs in two or three colors is typical of the abilities of Frontier Printing & Mailing Co. These abilities keep pace in this ever changing and advancing world. Frontier Printing and Mailing asked to have the opportunity to show potential customers how their creativity combined with modern equipment can improve a customer's communication of the printed word. The billed themselves as The Down-To-Earth Idea People! This booklet was printed by Dynamation using a Harris 23" by 29" press. IT is rare for this type of ephemeral marketing material to survive more than half a century. The production of this Space oriented marketing booklet was an indication of the capabilities and vision of the owners. We researched to see if this firm was still in business and it is. Vision Graphics Inc. as we know it today was founded by Francis E Brooks in 1952 as Frontier Lettershop in Cheyenne WY. Frontier evolved from an earlier startup in the employment agency business which was sold to an employee. Frontier grew over the years with name changes to Frontier Printing and Mailing and then back to Frontier Printing Inc. The company was sold to some staff in the early 1980's and four years later was reacquired by its founder. In 1986 Mr. Brooks recruited his nephew Mark Steputis into the business. Mark had graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in marketing. As the years went by Mark got more involved with the management of the company and was promoted to Vice President and by 1995 was named President of the company. Mark acquired ownership of the company in 1996 after his uncle's passing. At this point the company was marketing its services to a wider and wider geographic area and the bulk of the work was coming from Northern Colorado companies while the company remained in Cheyenne WY. The company grew quickly and Vision became a dominate player in the rocky mountain market with business across the country. Frontier Printing & Mailing Co unknown

"A fraternal souvenir presented to the Pacific Coast Clubs of Printing House Craftsmen for preservation in their archives by the Club of Printing House Craftsmen of the City of New York---the pioneer club---on the occasion of the visits of its Delegates en route to the Eleventh Annual Convention of the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen Los Angeles August 16-21 1930." Large tall folio 13" X 19". Faux vellum spine over blue paper covered boards gilt ruled edge to front cover gilt fraternal device. 14 leaves on thick watermarked deckle edge paper. A stub of paper shows between the front pastedown and the ffep but I suspect this was just a printing flaw and not a missing leave as the decorative blue ruled lines of the pastedown carry over to the recto of the first endpaper and this also matches the rear endpapers. Photographically reproduced historical documents relating to the establishment and history of the Club of Printing House Craftsmen. The colophon states "Note: The originals of the historic documents reproduced in this souvenir are from the extensive collection of memorabilia relating to the printers' associations of every sort in all countries gathered by Henry Lewis Bullen founder of the Typographic Library and Museum of the American Type Founders Company. The souvenir was planned by Mr. Bullen at the request of the Officers of the Club of Printing House Craftsmen of New York City. The printing was done by Wadsworth A. Parker Manager of the Typographic Department of the American Type Founders Company with the assistance of Thad S. Walling General Superintendent of Printing for the McGraw-Hill Publilshing Company. These gentlemen are charter members of the parent Club. This strictly limited edition is issued primarily for presentations to the various Clubs which have extended hospitalities to the Delegates and other members of the New York Club while en route to the Eleventh Annual Convention of the International Association in Los Angeles. With text and decorations lithographed featuring decorative borders and initials throughout those on 55 pages COLORED AND ILLUMINATED BY HAND many of these in a Medieval or Renaissance style others with Japanese or Greek motifs with a small hand-painted miniature of the Crucifixion against a golden sky and WITH A FULL-PAGE HAND-PAINTED MINIATURE showing the Flight into Egypt within a decorative border featuring vignettes of a peasant gathering wood and a knight in armor praying. With a hand-painted ribbon bookmark "Souvenir de ma 1ère Communion" dated 6 June 1909; carbon copy of a poem "A la Memoire de ma tres chere et regrettee cousine Mathilde Deburghgraeve-Canal" by Lucy Salze-Bouchet dated February 1945 this with short curving tear into one margin. Just the most trivial signs of wear but A VERY FINE COPY the vellum leaves quite clean and very bright with shining decorations and the binding lustrous and virtually unworn.<br/> <br/> Luxuriously lithographed on vellum handsomely bound and illuminated and painted by hand in vibrant colors this charming prayer book was obviously treasured by its owners--the first of whom may have been a young lady who received it on the occasion of her First Communion. The text and decorations here have been reproduced lithographically from a manuscript of the period being printed apparently by Bouasse-Lebel et Massin--a company specializing in devotional prints and books. The firm's name appears in very small letters at various places in the volume. Each leaf contains a different border design inspired by Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts as well as artwork from around the world in a pleasing pastiche of Western Egyptian Japanese Indian and Grecian motifs. Many of the borders have been hand-colored and present an array of distinct palettes usually richly hued which adds greatly to the book's appeal and the viewer's sense of discovery from page to page. The bespoke binding featuring the Madonna in profile beautifully modelled in leather adds another element of luxury to the book. The coat of arms suggests that it was made for a member of the Deburghgraeve family and the laid-in poem suggests that it remained with them through the death of the family's matriarch Mathilde Deburghgraeve-Canal in 1944. We know that Mathilde had three daughters all born around the turn of the century; based on the presence of a bookmark commemorating a First Communion in 1909 it is likely that the original recipient was among these three young ladies. Bouasse-Lebel was established in 1845 by Eulalie Bouasse-Lebel 1809-98 as a means of supporting herself and her children following the dissolution of her marriage. Though founded under difficult circumstances Bouasse-Lebel became a very successful enterprise and even earned a papal commendation in 1871 for consistently excellent work. The company was highly regarded for the quality and delicacy of their productions of which the present work is a choice example. Although individual religious cards printed by Bouasse-Lebel show up fairly frequently far scarcer are complete books in the estimable condition seen here--particularly those with the kind of deluxe upgrades that make this particular item so desirable. Woodcut initials three of which are large 49 x 49 cm. 348 279 190 2 66 -Index pp. <br/><br/><em>The rare first Langi/ Langum-edition and third Latin edition of the Opera of Justin. The first edition of the Opera in the original Greek appeared in 1551 Paris Stephanus. The first Latin edition appeared in 1554 Basel Dupuys the second the Galen-edition in 1555 Basel Hier. Froben & Nic. Episcopius and the third the Langi-edition in 1565. This is probably the best of the Latin editions and the Latin version of the Opera by Jo. Langi was also used for the standard Greek-Latin parallel editions of 1593 and 1615. Justin the Martyr 100 - 165 AD was a Christian philosopher who was brought up a pagan. He is primarily known for his dailogues and his apologies all of which are present here. The apologies constitute the earliest Christian ones of some length. He died a martyr in Rome after having been condemned a Christian by Q. Junius Rusticus. As a philosopher he dealt with Stocism Aristotelianism and Pythagoreanism before he meant to have found the truth in Platonism. Philosophically he is most interesting in his attempt to unite Christianity with philosophy i.e. Platonism as Boethius did a few centuries later and Justin actually anticipates the philosophy of history of Origin ca. 185 - ca. 255 and Eusebius ca. 260 - 340. He is very interesting when viewed as a thinker who represents the union of philosophy and thought with the new religious attraction in the Eastern part of the Empire under Antonius Pius i.e. Christianity.Graesse III:515 Adams J:497 not in Brunet. </em> hardcover

This is a reprint of MacLeish's poem "Poem" which originally appeared in A Miscellany of American Poetry 1927 with a foreword by Powell. When Powell expressed his interest in publishing the poem which had not appeared in MacLeish's collected poems MacLeish was "astonished" and told Powell "I have no memory of the poem and…I do not recognize the rhythms as mine. Original Cockerell marbled paper wrappers. . 9 in. x 4 in. . Printed decorations in blue and gold by Rex Brandt. Hand-set and printed by Ward Ritchie on an Albion hand press. Handmade paper. A fine copy. Ward Ritchie notes in the colophon that as a student he wrote to MacLeish for permission to print a poem of his. The result was Interrogate the Stones which Ritchie published in an edition of twenty-seven copies in the spring of 1929 while he was a student at Frank Wiggins Trade School in Los Angeles.
