Oblong 4to original cloth covers new leather spine; latter pages with stains on lower margin some offsetting from pressed leaves to a few plates all edges gilt. Very scarce. <br/><br/>Edition in one volume. Moritz Retzsch was famed in Germany for his Outline Drawings of the works of Goethe and Schiller which encouraged him to turn his attention to Shakespeare producing his "Hamlet" series of 17 plates plus the popular "Shakspeare's Apotheosis". He proceeded to illustrate these 7 plays: Macbeth Romeo and Juliet King Lear The Tempest Othello Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 - all of which appear in this collected volume. These plates are preceded by explanatory texts in both German and English. His artwork became quite popular in Britain. especially influencing the Pre-Raphaelites and particularly Richard Dadd Daniel Maclise Dante Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown - who did his own treatment of King Lear. Feder in Braun, grau und braun laviert. Minimal fleckig und knitterfaltig, mit kleinen dünnen Papierstellen an den unteren Ecken, mit einigen winzigen Löchlein, die oberen Ecken ergänzt. Wohl Skizzenbuchblatt. Mit sicherem und flottem Strich hat der Zeichner den Blick über die Baumwipfel und Bäume hinweg auf eine italienische Ortschaft eingefangen. Das Wechselspiel von grau lavierten zu den allein mit braunem Federstrich umrissenen Partien verleiht dem Blatt großen Reiz.

Held, Georg Philipp Rugendas. Diss. München, 1996, G 98, hier wird unter der Anmerkung ein Aquarell erwähnt, das sich in der Graphischen Sammlung, Augsburg befindet (Inv.Nr. G 5626) und dessen Signatur, wie auch das Datum genau mit der hier vorliegenden Zeichnung übereinstimmen. Allerdings ist dieses Blatt viel weniger farbig als das vorliegende ausgeführt.
