"His drawings showed a delightful skill in landscape work . all of his illustrated books he showed a fine appreciation of thee author's point of view together with much character and imagination of his own . being usually called upon for pictures of the dainty graces and foibles of seventeenth and eighteenth century and early Victorian society . he destroyed much of his work as soon as drawn" DNB.
