This is a page-for-page reprint of the 1650 Elzevier editions; and the second of two impressions of 1671 (without the preliminary headpiece). Willems 1462n. Valerius Maximus was a widely read Roman author, but little is known of his life. This work, [Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings] was written around A.D. 30 and is a miscellany of anecdotes about a variety of subjects. Tomo I: pp.24; (24), 159, (17); (6), 254, (19), 1 bianca; Tomo II: pp. (24), 208, (11), 1 bianca + 13 (di 14) tavv. incise in rame (ogni parte con proprio front. e propria numerazione, ma registro continuo); + con nuovo registro 2 cc.n.n., pp. 204, (5), 3 bianche. Al primo front. marca tip. con sfera armillare, fregi tipogr. in xilogr., Tre antiporte fig.. Tra le tavole f.t., una pianta di Aquisgrana ripieg. Sul verso del frontespizio sono elencati i trattati con i loro autori. Purtroppo manca la parte IV con il trattato sulle terme inglesi. Tra gli altri, un trattato sulle terme di Aquisgrana, un trattato sulle terme della Gallia ed altri trattati sulle acque minerali in generale, loro uso e benefici. Margini molto corti che sfiorano il testo, altrimenti bell'esemplare nitido e ben conservato, accettabile per la sua rarità.

In 16° (cm 6,8 x 13), legatura piena pelle coeva, mancanza alla cuffia inferiore, pp (24), 608, (6), frontespizio inciso in rame da Pietro Clouwet, al verso della carta (*12), ritratto entro ovale dell'A., inciso in rame, sempre del Clouwet. Esemplare in buone condizioni, malgrado gora di umidità alle prime 24 pagine; bruniture uniformi, rare sottolineature in alcune pagine. Edizione senza indicazioni di stampatore e luogo di stampa, coeva alla parigina di Courbé del 1654 (la prima è del 1650). Da pagina 481 troviamo le Poésies del V. (1598-1648), poeta prezioso membro dell'Académie Française, frequentatore assiduo del Salon di Rambouillet, che eccelse nell'arte epistolare dando un carattere spontaneo e naturale a testi sapientemente elaborati, il cui influsso sulla formazione e il gusto classici fu considerevole. Edizione fatta sulla quarta di Courbé, "très petits caractères", ma "véritable elzévirienne" (Brunet, 1860-'80, col. 1347). Nessun esemplare censito in SBN e COPAC, uno in CCF.
