Two newspapers - The Hartford Dailty Times Vol. XXVI Number 10481 from April 18 1865 and Daily Morning Chronicle Vol. III Number 151 from April 28 1865; pp. 4 each; the Times folded with tears splits and some loss of paper mostly to margins fair to good condition; the Chronicle folded well-preserved with a few small nicks to edges; very good condition. Early newspaper accounts of the assasination of President Lincoln the Daily Times had its article titled: "The Assasination. A Deliberate Plot Unveiled." It gave a lengthy account of the deliberate preparations for the murder and speculations on the whereabouts of the assasins. The Chronicle's article - "Our National Loss. 1865008921Various locations 1865. Very good. Nine letters written to Stephen H. Gregory a member of D Company 39th New York Volunteer Infantry. Eight were written during April and May of 1865 while Gregory was recovering from wounds at the Homewood Hospital in Washington D. C. The ninth letter is pre-war. Two of the letters are enclosed in mailing envelopes with indistinct postal markings; one of the envelopes is franked with a 3-cent rose Washington stamp Scott #65 the stamp is missing from the other. Gregory's discharge certificate is also included. The letters are all in nice shape; the certificate has some storage folds and minor wear. <br /><br />The letters are primarily queries from family and friends about his wound "Stephen you had not aut to wash your wound after eny other persons wound for fear of the gang green" his general health "shugar making" and the death and wounding of other local soldiers mixed with considerable hope that Stephen would soon be able to return home. <br /><br />One letter however also references the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the hunt for John Wilkes Booth: "las Friday they is a corpral and three privates to the depo looking for the man kiled abrham linkin and they say that they git 3000 if they git him". <br /><br />The 39th New York Infantry the Garibaldi Guard was organized in New York City in the Spring of 1861 by Colonel Frederick George D'Utassy under special authority from the War Department. Initially the unit was divided into eleven companies each primarily composed of men of different national heritage; three companies were Hungarian three were German one Swiss one Italian one French one Spanish and one Portuguese. In the Summer of 1864 four companies A through D were mustered out however a new D Company was mustered into service that October from upstate New York. <br /><br />Gregory was from Lisbon New York and joined D Company while it was being organized at Malone New York. D Company fought in the Appomattox Campaign during March and April and it was during this time that Private Gregory was wounded. Gregory's military records are sparse but they do confirm that he was hospitalized for four weeks although they do not specify where or how badly he was wounded but based on the dates of the letters it must have been some time in April shortly be General Lee surrendered. <br /><br />A nice collection of letters to a wounded soldier clearly evidencing the love and concern of his family. <br /><br /> books

Ivan Sytin 1851 â 1934 was a prominent publisher owner of the biggest publishing empire in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Growing up poor and semi-literate with only two years of formal education at the age of 15 he apprenticed for a Moscow publisher who would eventually help him open his own business in 1876. He was catapulted from obscurity to fame in 1882 where he received a medal for his exhibits at the All-Russian Industrial and Artistic Exhibition and even more so in 1884 when Tolstoy chose him to work on his books. He would also publish a newspaper and would found Sytin's Art School many of which's students would go on to work for him after graduation. He would become famous for his children's books illustrated with Russian folk motifs in the style of Ivan Bilibin. The three current publications were issued right around and shortly after the Revolution when his printing house was nationalized and although the Bolsheviks allowed him to continue publishing his books were strictly censored and made to conform to the Government's requirements. - Ivashko. Two books bound together the first title presumed second edition OCLC lists only a 1817 edition and the second title is a second edition 1822 and 1825; 8 1/2 x 5 1/4; respectively: pp. 7 4-146 and pp. 1 IV-XV 2 2-228; 1/4 brown morocco and marbled boards; gilt dentelles and title to spine; laid paper; 1 1/2" cut to tail of spine; rubbed spots to corners; small label to upper margin of front board; remnants of a bookplate to front board verso; a small inked number and two stamps from the Kiev Historical Library and another German library; the first book illustrated with 25 full-page wood engravings the second with a large fold-out table; overall in very good condition. Both early-19th-century important works the books documented the holidays customs and religious landmarks of the Russian Eastern Orthodox Church. The first title literally translated as "The Book of Months" was essentially an ecclesiastical calendar containing the names of the saints in order of the dates on which they were commemorated and the festivals in their honor. Each month's entry was illustrated with beautiful wood engravings which depicted that month's saints as portrayed by the Orthodox Church. The second book gave descriptions and histories of famous Russian monasteries noteworthy cathedrals and churches in St. Petersburg and Moscow and more.
