1911000707New York: Max. N. Maisel 1911. First edition; 5 x 7 1/4; pp. 3 4-159 1; bound in black cloth over boards; private paper label to spine; hinges weak; spotting mostly to corners and margins of pages; piece of old tape to index page; overall in good condition. A compilation of Russian "songs of freedom" and revolutionary poems by various authors. Some of the works included are an early printings of Razrushennyi Mol' of Grigorii Gershuni a Russian revolutionary and a founder of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party and Maxim Gorky's "Piesnia o Bureviestnikie" The Song of the Stormy Petrel. Undoubtedly though one of the most interesting poems is "Fedorushka" by Tolstoy. In truth the poem was written by Russian poet Mikhail Rozengeim in 1880 for whose poetry the literary term "liberal accusation" was coined. Apparently Fedorushka was erroneously attributed to Tolstoy whom in fact did not like the poem and expressed great displeasure with the incorrect attribution. The mistake was most probably made by the publisher - Max N. Maisel who was a bookseller and publisher on New York's Lower East Side in the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. His shop was said to had been frequented by many political and cultural radicals. Only e-book copies of the first edition listed in OCLC. New York: Max. N. Maisel hardcover books
175635625London 1756. 76 and 70 pp. This is one of the more tragic episodes in British naval history. On his way to relieve the garrison on Minorca during the Seven Years War Byng was surprised by the French fleet. After an indecisive engagement with the French he retreated without being able to resupply the garrison. Byng thought he was doing what he needed to protect his ships but public and official opinion were against him. He was found guilty of dereliction of his duties. By the law of the day this was a capital crime and he was executed despite appeals for clemency from people in power. See DNB. NMM V part 1 1168. The two pamphlets dating from the time of the event were written in support of Byng. Appeal is missing the bottom of the last leaf with no loss of text. Further Particulars has a dark smudge at the top of the title page. Both are otherwise in very good condition removed from larger volumes and both are scarce in the trade. Appeal presently appears online for $1500. Particulars for $750. Both pamphlets unknown books

1885001827By the authors 1885. Softcover. Ten letters four manuscripts and six typed copies transcriptions one photograph 1884 - 1904; pp. 36 altogether in various formats; several small rust spots from paper clips; fold lines; one of them with a small red stamped number filing ; very good or better condition. An interesting and quite amusing collection of letters from all over the country spanning 20 years and mostly addressed to Frederick Lucas or to Smithsonian officials about Lucas it presumably belonged to Frederick himself. Frederick Augustus Lucas 1852 - 1929 was a prominent naturalist a major figure in the Great American Museum Movement Curator in Chief of the Brooklyn Museum and Director of the Museum of Natural History. Some of the letters addressed the Secretary and the Curator of the Smithsonian Institute in an angry indignant and incredulous tone complaining about Lucas' disregard of their fantastic discoveries of the natural world which had been previously brought to his attention. One memorable rant accompanied by an original photograph of the bone in question stated: "Dear Sir I acknowledge the return of skeleton but cannot sign receipt sent "as the breast-bone of a horse" The reason I sent the skeleton to you was that I believed that employers were fully competent to discharge their duties. I would suggest that you pump the whisky out of Lucas and send him to the lunatic asylum or Keely Institute." Another one addressed "Pro. Lucas" described in great detail with manuscript drawings a strange skull which Lucas had suggested belonged to a sheep refuting his opinion and asking for a closer examination. A third letter long and winded read: "Dear Sir Lucas.Sometime ago I read about you having an article in a paper about a large animal known by the name of Dinosaur. Your article was the first thing that I ever read about this monster." Other letters speculate about minerals fossils an "incredible petrified tree" etc. and the last one is a request for information about a Taxidermy examination and possible employment.
