He is recognised as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings which were combined with the use of watercolour a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Rackham's 51 colour pieces for the early American tale Rip Van Winkle became a turning point in the production of books since through colour-separated printing it featured the accurate reproduction of colour artwork. His best-known works also include the illustrations for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. Synopsis: A charming late Rackham anthology bringing together a personal selection of the nursery and fairy-story favourites that had as Rackham notes in his preface become part of everyday thought and expression. The collection draws on Perrault Andersen the Arabian Nights and English traditional tales and includes such staples as Sleeping Beauty Cinderella Jack and the Beanstalk Hop-o-My-Thumb Ali Baba Dick Whittington The Story of Sinbad the Sailor Jack the Giant Killer The Three Bears Aladdin Little Red Riding-Hood Hansel and Grethel The Ugly Duckling The Princess and the Pea Blue Beard The Emperors New Clothes and others. Although Rackham had illustrated some of these tales before the illustrations prepared for this book were issued here as a new suite for the volume.
