200523317London England: The Gramophone Company/Saregama India Limited 2005. First Edition. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket As Issued. London England: The Gramophone Company/Saregama India Limited 2005. Hardcover. Fine/None As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Ustad Zakir Hussain collectible item. A fine copy of "The First LP Record: The CD Replicated Version of His First Solo Recording" Compact Disc signed by Zakir Hussain. The first and only edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular CD version of the commemorative release. Issued in a small and limited one-time-only print run whose limitation is not known. There is no ISBN. The CD is now rare. Re-presents Zakir Hussain's "First LP Recording" in its re-mastered CD format for posterity. Relentlessly repetitive music of "tabla" percussion instrument with accompanying instrumentalists that starts slow gradually and inexorably builds up to a crescendo of ever faster louder and more complex rhythms before its recapitulation like an exhausted sigh at the end - as opposed to the loud bang with which Western music usually ends. Repetition is the basic principle and unit of ALL music: Western Classical Indigenous and Eastern/Indian Classical of which Zakir Hussain is one of the foremost exponents in both his native India and the musically advanced West since he released this ground-breaking recording in 1986. In the case of Western Classical music repetition is "relieved" by the introduction of a secondary - sometimes even tertiary - departure from the original sound which leads to the music's "development" before its inevitable return to the beginning. In Indian classical music the repetition while constant is more unpredictable although no less structured consisting of almost imperceptible extremely minute changes of tone dynamics and rhythm which influenced such composers as Philip Glass in our time. In Zakir Hussain's case the music climaxes with him suddenly raising his voice and rapidly reciting vocal sounds and indecipherable words a performance that comes across to our Western ears as a cross between glossolalia "speaking in tongues" and "jibber-jabber". For the point of Indian Classical repetition is "accumulation" a cumulative performance whose effect is hypnotic mesmerizing and spellbinding leading to a purified trance-like state for the attentive and fully committed listener. All four tracks are magnificently re-mastered in this landmark release: "Tentaal: Vilambit" "Matta Taal" "Punjabi Damar" and "Tentaal: Drut". An absolute "must-have" collectible not just memorabilia item for Ustad Zakir Hussain collectors. This is a copy of the "Collector's Edition" of "The First LP Recording" indicated/stamped as such in front. It is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker in front by Zakir Hussain. It is signed directly on the CD sleeve itself not on a separate label or tipped-in sheet. This title is one of the greatest modern recordings of Indian Classical music. As far as we know this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: Zakir Hussain did NOT sign most copies of the Collector's Edition. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest Indian Classical music composer/performers of our time. A fine collectible copy. . The Gramophone Company/Saregama India Limited hardcover
