ill., br. Sade è uno scrittore che non può lasciare indifferenti, che pone l'essere umano di fronte a questioni che, se non affrontate, permangono nella loro grave sospensione. La lettura dei suoi scritti (specie delle parti più feroci) può risultare molto sgradevole (ad altri, invece, noiosa). La tentazione di ridurre i suoi libri a semplice pornografia non è lieve. Ma in realtà, nei prolissi e scellerati volumi del divin marchese, si trova soprattutto l'esposizione profondamente meditata di un pensiero filosofico di "estrema" originalità e radicalità. Sebbene non manchino eccellenti interpretazioni del pensiero e della vita di Sade, è con difficoltà che possiamo trovare una indagine dei suoi scritti che li ritenga validi dal punto di vista dei contenuti teorici (o che almeno tenti di vederne la correlazione o l'incongruità). In questo libro, al quale hanno collaborato alcuni studiosi italiani, si è cercato di valutare, secondo determinate prospettive, la qualità e il peso della filosofia del marchese de Sade.
