Decorative borders of blue and gilt. Engraved vignette of Alnwick Castle on title-page. Period binding of full red morocco with raised bands decoration in gilt and blind all edges gilt. The author known as the Craven Poet was of humble background and was considered in his lifetime as a successor to Burns. The Duke of Northumberland was largely responsible for financing this edition of his work which may account for the fairly lavish nature of the printing. The list of subscribers includes the names of a number of other aristocrats as well as of a preponderance of residents of the author's native northern England including Titus Salt.Presentation copy from the author inscribed on the second black: ''To John Beach Esq with the Author Robert Story's best wishes - 2 Nov. 1858''. On the first blank is a presentation inscription dated in the following year from John Beach to his niece Mary. John Beach's name doesn't feature in the list of subscribers.
