You may know John Armleder as a Swiss artist whose work is emblematic of 80s Neo-Geo. Or you may know him as the artist who recently hung a disco ball at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. But this catalogue raisonna of Armleder's drawings shows how great a contribution he has made to shaping of the history of recent abstraction. Collecting almost 40 years of some 600 works on paper, the book traces Armleder's career through his Fluxus, Constructivist, "dot," and Neo-Geo periods, though it would be a mistake to pin any label on so versatile an artist and one who hasn't ever closed off a line of investigation. This branch of his oeuvre offers direct insight into his continued, often humorous confrontation with art, especially with the abstract and conceptual, and with the relationship of art to everyday reality. — Testi: Bovier Lionel, Ruf Beatrix. he publication accompanying the Belgian Pavilion at the next Venice Biennale, Personne et les autres borrow its title from a lost play by André Frankin, a Belgian art critic affiliated with the Lettrist and Situationist Internationals. The exhibition takes the history of the Belgian Pavilion and the international context of the Biennale (both derived from the colonial exhibitions and world expositions) as its points of departure. The Belgian Pavilion itself was the first foreign Pavilion to be built in the Giardini in Venice, during the reign of King Leopold II. Meessen’s work and artistic research have consistently explored the history and afterlife of colonial modernity. Edited by the curators of the Pavilion, Katerina Gregos and Vincent Meessen, this book will feature all the artists invited to show work alongside Meessen’s: Mathieu K. Abonnenc, Sammy Baloji, James Beckett, Elisabetta Benassi, Patrick Bernier & Olive Martin, Tamar Guimarães & Kasper Akhøj, Maryam Jafri, and Adam Pendleton. Interfunktionen, an art journal which published 12 issues between 1968 and 1975 in Cologne, was founded in 1968 as a form of protest by artists who had no affinity with the critical lines that were redrawn at Documenta that year. The review was of considerable importance as a vehicle for propagating pro-European ideas and as a union between artists in Europe and the United States, irrespective of the predominating movements of the time. It contained both theoretical and practical contributions, with the intervention of creators who defined and illustrated their artistic strategies. Directly linked to the most prominent figures in the Dsseldorf Kunstacademie, such as Joseph Beuys, Jorg Immendorf, and Sigmar Polke, it also boasted the involvement of the most spirited and reflexive artists of the times, from Vito Acconci and Marcel Broodthaers to Bruce Nauman and Dieter Roth. Interfunktionen, as its name indicates, was an inter-disciplinary publication, open to all artistic genres and with no restrictions as to media. This book is produced in collaboration with Fritz Heubach, the review's first editor, and depicts the experience of those years by means of original documents--some of them hitherto unpublished--artworks, and artists' writings.
