193593538Daily Herald. London. 1935. Colour bird's eye view of East Africa stretching out to the Mediterranean and Europe beyond. The map is foxed and also worn along creases and was made by S.J. Turner and published for the Daily Herald in London. The map shows the political divisions in the Horn of Africa during Italy's conquest of the region. Anglo-Egyptian Sudan Kenya Colony and British Somaliland are all still held by the U.K. Italian Somaliland Libya and Eritrea are held by the Italians but Abyssinia is still an independent country. The map uses an interesting grid-scale to represent distance with each edge of a square representing roughly 200 miles. This map covers Abyssinia Ethiopia just before it became Italian East Africa.Italian East Africa was an Italian colony established in 1936 consolidating preexisting Italian territories in East Africa with the newly-conquered Empire of Ethiopia. As is shown on the map the Italians quickly assumed the imperial trappings of the Empire of Ethiopia; here Vittorio Emanuele III is called "King of Italy and Emperor of Ethiopia" and Pietro Badoglio is "Duke of Addis Abeba". These titles were not recognized outside of Italy Nazi Germany and Japan. The map illustrates the subsidiary divisions of the colony: Somalia Arrar Galla-Sidamo Addis-Abeba Amhara and Eritrea. The colony would be expanded in 1940 with the conquest of French Somalia and British Somalia. In 1942 British and South African forces had captured most of the colony though an Italian guerrilla campaign continued into the next year. unknown
18526Both letters dated 21 November 1924. The two items in fair condition on aged and spotted paper with slight damage to one corner and minor water staining. ONE: Copy of Typed Letter to 'Jonathan Cape Esq. 11 Gower Street LONDON W.C.1.' 1p. folio. He begins: 'Dear Cape When you told me at the Devonshire Club that you were going to criticise the "Daily News" Literary page I was charmed as I always welcome attacks within reason. I did not realise that you were going to single out the paper that gives the greatest proportion of its space to literature for a quite libellous onslaught.' He hopes that Cape will publish the letter to the editor of 'Now and Then' which he is enclosing in his 'next number' as it shows that 'the attack was based on complete ignorance of the amount of space we devote to literature'. He feels the attack is 'likely to do the paper a great deal of damage among the people to whom "Now and Then" goes and asks him to place an apology in his next advertisement in The Times. He concludes: 'I am pretty sure that you did not write the article yourself but whoever did ought to have kept to something like the facts and to have kept within the limits of fair criticism.' TWO: 'To the Editor. "Now and Then".' From 'ROBERT LYND Literary Editor of the "Daily News".' 2pp. folio. Begins: 'It is unfortunate that the writer of the attack on the "Daily News" in your pages should not have taken the trouble to read the paper he attacks even for a single week. If he had done so he would have realised that the "Daily News" alone among London daily newspapers contains book reviews on every day of the week. He tells us that "while some hundreds of books are issued each week by publishers in Britain the London "Daily News" considers two or three in its literary page twice a week". There is not a single paper in London concerning which this statement is so widely untrue as it is of the "Daily News". Our reviews are an every day feature as is the case with no other London daily and we devote a greater proportion of our space to literature than any other newspaper in London.' The letter proceeds in the same indignant vein including a list of 29 individuals starting with Arnold Bennett and ending with 'Prof. Ernest Weekley' who have 'contributed reviews to the "Daily News" since I became Literary Editor'. Both letters dated 21 November 1924. unknown
24748No date circa 1920 or place but circa 1920 On paper watermarked ‘The Club Note Thomas & Sons London’. The circumstances surrounding this extraordinary original composition in Latin verse are obscure. See Phillips’s entry in the Oxford DNB which notes that there was ‘an air of Proust’ about him and quotes Oliver Brown’s description of him as ‘a stout man immaculately dressed and heavily scented who talked continuously while he looked at the pictures'. It may be that Phillips and the author of the poem had been educated together or that they were members of the same club the Athenaeum for example. Whatever their relationship the author of the present work was clearly a capable classicist. Until the handwriting has been compared the suggestion cannot be dismissed that he might be the Professor of the Classical Association and Corpus Christi Professor of Latin at Oxford Albert Curtis Clark described in his own ODNB entry as a man who ‘could carry his learning lightly was the best of company full of humour and of wit and a perfect raconteur’. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and creased. Central horizontal crease. Written in black ink. Poem and translation face one another with the Latin text beneath the heading ‘IN CLAUDIUM PHILIPPSIUM. EQUITEM.’ on the recto of the second leaf and the translation headed ‘IN LIBIDINOSUM.’ on the verso of the first. The Latin poem is twelve lines long in three four-line stanzas. It begins: ‘Cur stercoratae verba licentiae / Libidinosus semper in auribus / Emittis obscaenisque gaudes / Colloquiis .’. The English translation reads in its entirety: ‘Why dost thou lustful discharge ever in our / ears words of licence reeking of the dungheap: / why dost thou rejoice in obscene conversations O / Veteran Claudius / Old age presses on: thy last word inserted language planted with dirty last word inserted refuse / dishonours thy white hair: a forehead ploughed / with hardset wrinkles is out of keeping with / lascivious words. / Do thou at least case from foul gossip: last word an emendation of ‘talk’ let thy / bawdy stories be silenced remembering / thy industrious youth O Old Man worthy / of a better reputation.’ No date [circa 1920?] or place, but circa 1920? On paper watermarked ‘The Club Note | Thomas & Sons | London’. unknown
